Verify your CIP code before applying
Check your degree's CIP code against the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List before targeting roles. Business analytics and management information systems degrees qualify; a general business degree often does not, even if your coursework was quantitative.
Confirm E-Verify enrollment before accepting offers
Ask recruiters for the company's E-Verify company ID or look up enrollment status through the E-Verify employer search. A company that isn't enrolled cannot legally employ you on a STEM OPT extension, regardless of how willing they are to sponsor.
Build a portfolio of SQL and BI deliverables now
Hiring managers for Senior BI Engineer roles screen for production-level dashboards, data modeling schemas, and query optimization examples. A GitHub repository with documented ETL pipelines or Power BI reports signals you can contribute from day one, which reduces employer hesitation around OPT timelines.
Target employers with active H-1B LCA history
Use Migrate Mate to filter Senior Business Intelligence Engineer roles by employers with verified DOL Labor Condition Application filing history. Companies that have filed LCAs for BI or data engineering roles have already navigated the visa sponsorship process and understand the requirements.
Negotiate your I-983 training plan during the offer stage
The I-983 must specify learning objectives tied to your BI role, such as developing dimensional data models or leading cross-functional reporting initiatives. Raise this document during offer negotiation, not after signing, so HR and your direct manager align on the formal training structure USCIS expects.
Apply 90 days before your OPT expiration date
USCIS requires your STEM OPT extension application to be filed no earlier than 90 days before your current EAD expires. Coordinate with your DSO to submit the I-765 within that window so you maintain continuous work authorization without a gap between your initial OPT and the extension.

Find Senior Business Intelligence Engineer JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does a Senior Business Intelligence Engineer role qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
Yes, if your job duties involve applying STEM knowledge, such as building data pipelines, designing dimensional models, or developing analytics infrastructure. The role itself must connect directly to your STEM degree field. Your DSO will confirm the match when approving your I-983 training plan, which formally documents how the position develops your technical skills.
Which STEM degrees make me eligible for the STEM OPT extension in a BI engineering role?
Degrees in computer science, information systems, statistics, applied mathematics, data science, or computer engineering are commonly accepted. Check your degree's CIP code against the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List. General business or management degrees without a quantitative or technical focus typically do not qualify, even if you completed data-heavy coursework during your program.
What does the I-983 training plan need to include for a Senior BI Engineer position?
Your I-983 must outline specific learning goals tied to the BI role, such as mastering cloud data warehouse architecture, building automated reporting systems, or leading data governance initiatives. Both you and your employer sign it, and USCIS can audit compliance. Vague objectives that don't connect to your technical degree field are a common reason training plans get flagged.
How do I find Senior Business Intelligence Engineer employers enrolled in E-Verify?
You can search employer enrollment status through the E-Verify employer search tool. Migrate Mate also surfaces Senior Business Intelligence Engineer roles at employers with active visa sponsorship history, so you can prioritize companies already familiar with the STEM OPT compliance requirements, including E-Verify enrollment and I-983 reporting obligations.
What happens to my STEM OPT authorization if my employer loses E-Verify enrollment after I start?
If your employer's E-Verify participation terminates while you're on STEM OPT, your work authorization is at risk. You must report employer changes to your DSO within five days and file an updated I-983. If the employer cannot restore enrollment, you'll need to find a new E-Verify-enrolled employer or your STEM OPT extension may be invalidated by USCIS.
