Verify your degree's CIP code eligibility
Check O*NET for the SOC code tied to Configuration Analyst roles, then confirm your degree's CIP code appears on the USCIS STEM Designated Degree Program List. Degrees in computer science, information systems, or systems engineering typically qualify, but IT management degrees vary by school.
Confirm E-Verify enrollment before accepting offers
Any employer who wants to hire you on STEM OPT must be enrolled in E-Verify. Search the E-Verify employer database by company name before your offer stage, not after, to avoid delays that eat into your authorization window.
Build your I-983 training plan around configuration work
Your I-983 must map your Configuration Analyst duties to your STEM degree's learning objectives. Document specific tasks like software build management, environment provisioning, and change control workflows so your DSO can certify the plan ties directly to your field of study.
Target employers with active IT infrastructure teams
Configuration Analyst roles sit inside IT ops, DevOps, and enterprise systems departments. Companies running large ERP, ITSM, or cloud environments hire for this function regularly. Use Migrate Mate to filter for employers verified to hire STEM OPT candidates in systems and IT roles.
Understand cap-gap protection if your OPT bridges H-1B
If you file an H-1B visa petition before your STEM OPT expires, cap-gap protection extends your work authorization through September 30 of that fiscal year. USCIS requires your employer to have filed a timely, non-frivolous H-1B petition to trigger this coverage.
Use OFLC Wage Search to benchmark your offer
STEM OPT employers must pay you the same wage as similarly situated U.S. workers. Look up the prevailing wage for Configuration Analyst under the correct SOC code using OFLC Wage Search before evaluating any offer, so you can flag below-market compensation early.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Configuration Analyst role qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
It depends on your degree and how the employer classifies the role. Configuration Analyst positions typically fall under SOC codes for computer systems analysts or software quality assurance roles. If your degree is in a STEM-designated field like computer science or information systems and the role directly applies that training, your DSO can authorize the 24-month STEM OPT extension.
What happens if my employer isn't enrolled in E-Verify?
You can't work on a STEM OPT extension at a non-E-Verify employer. E-Verify enrollment is a legal requirement, not a preference. If your employer isn't enrolled when you apply for the extension, they need to register first. Your DSO won't recommend the extension and USCIS won't approve your I-765 without confirmed employer E-Verify participation.
What should my I-983 training plan include for a Configuration Analyst position?
Your I-983 must describe how your Configuration Analyst duties connect to your STEM degree. Include specifics like configuration management database maintenance, software deployment pipelines, environment lifecycle management, or ITSM platform administration. Vague job descriptions get flagged during DSO review. Both you and your employer supervisor must sign the form, and your DSO must certify it before your extension takes effect.
How do I find Configuration Analyst employers who hire STEM OPT students?
Use Migrate Mate to search for Configuration Analyst roles at employers verified to support STEM OPT work authorization. Many IT employers post Configuration Analyst positions without explicitly advertising STEM OPT eligibility, so filtering by E-Verify enrollment status saves significant time compared to researching each employer individually during your job search.
Can I work as a Configuration Analyst while my STEM OPT extension is pending?
Yes, if you applied for the extension before your initial 12-month OPT EAD expired and you remain employed with the same employer, you're covered by an automatic 180-day cap-gap while USCIS adjudicates your I-765. If you change employers during this pending period, your new employer must be E-Verify enrolled and you must update your I-983 training plan with your DSO before starting.
