Verify your CIP code before applying
Your STEM OPT eligibility depends on your degree's Classification of Instructional Programs code, not just the degree title. Check with your DSO that your program maps to a STEM-designated CIP code before targeting ServiceNow Developer postings.
Confirm E-Verify status before accepting offers
ServiceNow Developer roles at staffing agencies or smaller IT consultancies often lack E-Verify enrollment. Search the E-Verify employer search tool by company name before you reach the offer stage to avoid last-minute complications.
Build a ServiceNow portfolio with certified credentials
Employers filing I-983 training plans expect documentation of hands-on platform work. Completing the ServiceNow Certified System Administrator exam and building a portfolio of flow designer or integration hub projects strengthens your case during the offer process.
Target enterprise companies with existing OPT hiring patterns
Use Migrate Mate to filter ServiceNow Developer roles by employers with documented STEM OPT hiring history, so you spend your 36-month authorization window on employers who already understand the I-983 requirement and E-Verify process.
Negotiate your I-983 training plan before your start date
Your employer must sign and submit the I-983 before your STEM OPT extension activates. Raise the training plan conversation during the offer negotiation phase, not after onboarding, so HR has time to define your learning objectives and reporting schedule.
Use OFLC Wage Search to set salary expectations by location
ServiceNow Developer prevailing wages vary significantly by metro area and experience level. Run the OFLC Wage Search for SOC code 15-1252 in your target city before negotiating, so your offer aligns with DOL wage tier requirements relevant to any future H-1B visa transition.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a ServiceNow Developer role qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
Yes, if your job duties involve software development, systems integration, or platform engineering on the ServiceNow ecosystem, the role typically maps to SOC code 15-1252 (Software Developers) or a related STEM occupation. Your DSO will confirm qualification based on your degree's CIP code and your employer's written training plan. You can cross-reference the occupation profile on O*NET to verify the degree requirements align with your credential.
What does the I-983 training plan require for a ServiceNow Developer position?
The I-983 must describe the practical training you'll receive, the skills you'll develop on the ServiceNow platform, how those activities relate to your STEM degree, and how your employer will supervise and evaluate your progress. For ServiceNow roles, this typically covers areas like workflow automation, scripting, integration development, and platform administration. Your employer signs the form, and USCIS requires you to report progress every six months and at the end of the extension period.
How do I confirm my employer is enrolled in E-Verify?
STEM OPT employers are legally required to be enrolled in E-Verify before your extension can be authorized. You can search the E-Verify employer search tool by company name to confirm enrollment status. If an employer is not listed, they must complete enrollment before your DSO can approve your STEM OPT extension request. Staffing agencies and third-party IT consultancies that place ServiceNow developers at client sites must themselves be enrolled, not just the end client.
What happens to my STEM OPT if my ServiceNow Developer role ends before the 24 months are up?
You have a 60-day grace period from the date your employment ends to find a new qualifying employer, transfer your I-983 to the new company, and have your DSO update your SEVIS record. During that window you cannot work. If you secure a new role with an E-Verify-enrolled employer within 60 days, your remaining STEM OPT authorization continues. Use Migrate Mate to search for ServiceNow Developer openings filtered by employers prepared to support STEM OPT students.
Can a ServiceNow Developer on STEM OPT transition to H-1B sponsorship?
Yes, and the STEM OPT extension is specifically structured to bridge that gap. With up to 36 months of total OPT authorization, you can remain employed through one or more H-1B lottery cycles. If you're selected in the lottery, the cap-gap rule extends your STEM OPT work authorization automatically until October 1 of the fiscal year your H-1B takes effect, as long as your employer files the petition before your EAD expires.
