Verify your CIP code before applying
Pull your degree's CIP code from your I-20 and cross-reference it against the STEM Designated Degree Program List published by USCIS. Computer Science, Information Systems, and Statistics codes typically qualify for BI Engineer roles, but Data Analytics programs vary by institution.
Confirm E-Verify enrollment before accepting offers
Ask your recruiter for the employer's E-Verify Company ID or look up their participation status through the E-Verify employer search. A company that isn't enrolled can't legally sign your I-983 training plan, which voids your extension eligibility entirely.
Align your I-983 training goals to BI deliverables
When drafting your I-983, map each learning objective to specific BI outputs: dashboard builds, data model design, or SQL pipeline work. DSOs flag vague training plans, and a well-structured I-983 tied to real project milestones speeds DSO approval significantly.
Target employers with active DOL LCA filings for BI roles
Search Migrate Mate to filter employers by verified DOL Labor Condition Application filings in BI-related SOC codes. Employers with recent LCA history for data or analytics roles have already navigated STEM OPT hiring and are far less likely to withdraw offers over authorization complexity.
Check prevailing wage requirements for your target market
Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the prevailing wage for your SOC code and the metro area where the role is based. BI Engineer salaries vary sharply by region, and knowing the DOL wage floor helps you identify whether an offer is structured to support future H-1B visa sponsorship.
Use O*NET to substantiate your specialty occupation argument
Pull the O*NET occupation profile for Business Intelligence Analysts or Data Engineers and note the listed education requirements. This documentation strengthens your case if an employer's HR team questions whether your BI role qualifies as a specialty occupation for cap-gap or H-1B transition purposes.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Business Intelligence Engineer role qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
Yes, provided two conditions are met. First, your degree must be listed on the STEM Designated Degree Program List maintained by USCIS, which includes most Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, and Statistics programs. Second, the BI Engineer role must directly relate to your degree field. Your DSO makes the final determination when approving your I-983 training plan.
What E-Verify requirement applies to my STEM OPT employer?
Your employer must be actively enrolled in E-Verify before you begin STEM OPT employment. This isn't optional. If they enroll after you start, the extension is still invalid for that period. Confirm enrollment before signing an offer by asking for the company's E-Verify Company ID, or verify their status directly through E-Verify's employer search tool.
How do I find Business Intelligence Engineer jobs where employers are already set up for STEM OPT?
Browse Business Intelligence Engineer listings on Migrate Mate, which filters employers by verified E-Verify enrollment and DOL Labor Condition Application filing history. Targeting employers with existing LCA filings in data and analytics roles means the hiring team has already worked through STEM OPT paperwork and won't need to build the process from scratch around your offer.
What should my I-983 training plan include for a BI Engineer position?
Your I-983 must describe specific training goals tied to your BI work, not just your job title. List concrete deliverables such as building dimensional data models, developing ETL pipelines, or designing executive dashboards. Each goal should connect back to your STEM degree field. Your employer's supervisor signs off on the plan, and your DSO reviews it before authorizing the extension.
What happens to my work authorization if my STEM OPT expires while an H-1B petition is pending?
If your employer filed an H-1B petition on your behalf before your STEM OPT end date and the petition is still pending, cap-gap protection extends your OPT authorization through September 30 of that fiscal year. If the H-1B is selected and approved, your status transitions on October 1. USCIS publishes cap-gap guidance each registration cycle confirming the specific conditions that apply.
