Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding STEM OPT Authorization as a Senior Business Intelligence Analyst
Verify your CIP code before applying
Check that your degree's Classification of Instructional Programs code appears on the STEM OPT designated degree list. Degrees in computer science, statistics, information systems, and applied mathematics typically qualify. Your DSO can confirm your I-20's CIP code.
Confirm E-Verify enrollment before accepting offers
Ask hiring managers directly whether the company is enrolled in E-Verify before you reach the offer stage. An employer not enrolled in E-Verify cannot legally employ you on a STEM OPT extension, regardless of how willing they are to sponsor.
Build your I-983 training plan around BI deliverables
Your I-983 must tie your day-to-day work to your STEM degree. Map specific BI outputs like dashboard development, data pipeline design, or predictive modeling to competencies from your degree program. Vague plans get flagged by DSOs and can delay your extension approval.
Use OFLC Wage Search to benchmark your offer
Before signing an offer, look up the prevailing wage for your SOC code and job location using OFLC Wage Search. STEM OPT employers must pay you at least the same rate as similarly employed U.S. workers, and a significantly below-market offer can signal a compliance problem.
Target analytics teams with dedicated BI tooling
On Migrate Mate, filter for employers with LCA filing history in data and analytics roles. Companies that have already filed for BI or data analyst positions have demonstrated familiarity with work authorization requirements and are less likely to withdraw offers over STEM OPT paperwork.
File your STEM OPT extension 90 days before OPT expires
Submit your STEM OPT extension application to USCIS no later than 90 days before your initial OPT end date. If your application is pending when your OPT expires, you're covered by a 180-day cap-gap period, but you must have filed on time to qualify.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Senior Business Intelligence Analyst role qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
Yes, if your degree is in a STEM-designated field such as computer science, statistics, management information systems, or applied mathematics. The role itself isn't what qualifies you; your degree's CIP code does. Confirm your I-20 lists a qualifying CIP code with your DSO before applying, and check that the job duties align with your degree field to satisfy the I-983 training plan requirement.
Does my STEM OPT employer have to be enrolled in E-Verify?
Yes. E-Verify enrollment is a hard legal requirement for any employer hiring a STEM OPT student. Before accepting an offer, ask the recruiter or HR contact directly whether the company is enrolled and active in E-Verify. You can also verify enrollment through the E-Verify employer search tool. Working for a non-enrolled employer on STEM OPT violates your status.
What goes into an I-983 training plan for a BI analyst position?
Your I-983 must describe how your day-to-day work connects to your STEM degree. For a Senior BI Analyst, that means linking specific tasks like building data models, writing SQL, or developing executive dashboards to academic competencies from your program. The employer's supervisor must co-sign the plan, and you'll submit 12-month and 24-month evaluations to your DSO throughout the extension period.
What happens to my STEM OPT authorization if I'm waiting for an H-1B decision?
If your employer files an H-1B visa petition on your behalf before your STEM OPT expires and USCIS selects you in the lottery, the cap-gap provision extends your work authorization automatically until October 1 of that fiscal year. You can continue working as a Senior BI Analyst during the cap-gap period without any interruption, as long as you remain in valid status and your petition is pending.
Where can I find Senior Business Intelligence Analyst jobs that accept STEM OPT students?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for F-1 STEM OPT students and surfaces employers with verified E-Verify enrollment and LCA filing history in data and analytics roles. Filtering by role type and work authorization shows you which companies have already hired workers in similar positions, so you're not guessing about sponsorship willingness before you apply.
