Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding STEM OPT Authorization as a Technical Solutions Consultant
Verify your CIP code matches the role
Pull your degree's CIP code from your I-20 and cross-reference it against the SOC code for Technical Solutions Consultant roles using O*NET. A mismatch between your field of study and the role's occupational classification is the most common reason DSOs reject STEM OPT extension requests.
Confirm E-Verify enrollment before accepting
Ask your recruiter to provide the company's E-Verify Employer ID or search the E-Verify employer search tool directly. An employer that isn't enrolled cannot legally employ you on STEM OPT, and enrolling takes time, so verify this before you reach the offer stage.
Build a degree-to-role narrative for your application
Hiring managers at technical consulting firms often screen STEM OPT candidates on whether the role genuinely requires your degree. Prepare a written explanation connecting your STEM coursework, such as systems analysis or software engineering, to the specific client problem-solving responsibilities in the job description.
Target employers with active LCA filing history
Use Migrate Mate to filter Technical Solutions Consultant roles by employers who have filed Labor Condition Applications, which signals they understand the visa compliance process and have sponsored similar roles before. This cuts down time spent on employers who will stall at the paperwork stage.
Draft your I-983 training plan before your start date
USCIS requires a completed I-983 before you begin STEM OPT employment. Work with your employer contact, often a manager or HR lead, to document specific learning objectives tied to your STEM degree. Generic job descriptions copied into the form are a leading cause of DSO rejections.
Understand cap-gap coverage if your H-1B is selected
If you're in STEM OPT when an H-1B visa petition is filed on your behalf and the cap lottery selects it, cap-gap rules automatically extend your work authorization through September 30 of that year. Confirm with your DSO that your OPT end date and petition receipt dates align to avoid any gap in employment authorization.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Technical Solutions Consultant role qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
It depends on whether the role's SOC code aligns with your degree's CIP code and meets USCIS's definition of a STEM-designated field. Most Technical Solutions Consultant positions are classified under SOC codes in computer and information systems or industrial engineering, which are covered fields. Confirm the match with your DSO before accepting an offer, since your employer's job description language affects the I-983 approval.
What STEM degrees make you eligible for this extension in this role?
Degrees in computer science, information systems, software engineering, systems engineering, and applied mathematics are the most commonly accepted for Technical Solutions Consultant roles. The key is that your degree's CIP code must appear on the STEM Designated Degree Program List maintained by the Department of Homeland Security, and your DSO must confirm the match before approving the extension on your I-20.
How do I find Technical Solutions Consultant jobs where the employer is already E-Verify enrolled?
Migrate Mate filters job listings by employers with verified E-Verify enrollment and LCA filing history, so you're not wasting applications on companies that can't legally hire STEM OPT students. You can also cross-check any employer directly through the E-Verify employer search function before submitting an application.
What goes into the I-983 training plan for a Technical Solutions Consultant position?
Your I-983 must describe how the day-to-day responsibilities of the role, such as diagnosing technical issues, designing client-specific solutions, or analyzing system performance, directly apply knowledge from your STEM degree. USCIS expects specific learning objectives, not a restatement of your job description. Your employer's designated training supervisor signs off, and your DSO must approve the plan before your STEM OPT start date.
What happens to my STEM OPT if my H-1B petition is filed while I'm working as a Technical Solutions Consultant?
If your employer files an H-1B cap-subject petition before your OPT expires and USCIS selects it in the lottery, cap-gap provisions extend your OPT work authorization automatically through September 30 of the fiscal year the H-1B takes effect. You can continue working in your Technical Solutions Consultant role during this period without interruption, provided your employer maintains E-Verify enrollment and your I-983 remains on file.
