Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding STEM OPT Authorization in Master Data Management
Verify your degree's CIP code first
Check your degree's Classification of Instructional Programs code against the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List before applying. Information systems and computer science degrees typically qualify, but data management specializations housed in business schools sometimes don't.
Search E-Verify status before applying
Confirm an employer is actively enrolled in E-Verify through the E-Verify employer search tool before investing time in their process. MDM teams at smaller analytics consultancies often aren't enrolled, even when the parent company is.
Frame your I-983 around data governance deliverables
Write your Form I-983 training plan around specific learning objectives tied to data stewardship, metadata management, or data quality frameworks like DAMA-DMBOK. Vague plans that don't connect the role to your STEM degree field draw more DSO scrutiny.
Target industries with mature MDM programs
Financial services, healthcare, and manufacturing companies tend to have established MDM functions and dedicated sponsorship pipelines. Use O*NET's occupation profile for Database Administrators and Architects to identify industries with the highest employment concentration for data management roles.
Negotiate your offer letter before the I-983 is filed
Get your job title, reporting structure, and core technical responsibilities confirmed in writing before your DSO approves the training plan. USCIS can audit I-983 alignment with your actual duties, so mismatches between the offer and the plan create compliance risk.
Use Migrate Mate to filter for E-Verify employers
Search Master Data Management roles on Migrate Mate, which surfaces employers verified for STEM OPT hiring. Filtering by E-Verify status early cuts out companies where you'd need to educate HR about enrollment requirements mid-process.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does my STEM degree qualify me for the STEM OPT extension in a Master Data Management role?
Your degree must appear on the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List by its CIP code. Degrees in computer science, information systems, management information systems, and data science typically qualify. A business analytics degree from a business school may not qualify even if the coursework is technical, so confirm your CIP code with your DSO before assuming eligibility.
Does my employer need to be enrolled in E-Verify to hire me on STEM OPT?
Yes. E-Verify enrollment is a mandatory requirement for every employer hiring a STEM OPT student, with no exceptions. You can confirm enrollment through the E-Verify employer search before accepting an offer. If an employer isn't enrolled, they must complete enrollment before your STEM OPT extension can be authorized. Many smaller MDM consultancies and data teams at mid-size firms haven't completed this step, so check early.
What goes into the Form I-983 training plan for a Master Data Management position?
The I-983 must describe how the role provides practical training directly related to your STEM degree. For MDM roles, this means documenting specific learning objectives around data governance frameworks, data quality processes, metadata architecture, or master data stewardship. Your employer signs the plan, and your DSO must approve it before your extension is authorized. USCIS can audit the plan against your actual job duties, so the description needs to match your day-to-day responsibilities accurately.
What happens to my work authorization if my H-1B petition is filed but not yet approved when my STEM OPT expires?
If your employer files a cap-subject H-1B visa petition before your STEM OPT expires and USCIS receives it by the April 1 filing deadline, cap-gap protection extends your OPT authorization through September 30 of that year. If your H-1B is selected and approved, your status transitions on October 1. Your DSO issues an updated I-20 reflecting the cap-gap period, and you can continue working for the same employer throughout.
How do I find Master Data Management jobs where the employer is already set up for STEM OPT hiring?
Migrate Mate filters Master Data Management listings by employers enrolled in E-Verify, so you're only seeing roles where the foundational STEM OPT requirement is already met. This saves significant time compared to screening employers manually mid-application. You can also cross-reference DOL LCA filing data to see which employers have actively sponsored work visas in data and technology roles.
