Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding STEM OPT Authorization as a Storage Engineer
Verify your CIP code before applying
Cross-reference your degree's Classification of Instructional Programs code against the official STEM Designated Degree Program List that USCIS maintains. Storage Engineer roles draw candidates from computer science, computer engineering, and information systems programs, but not every IT-adjacent degree qualifies.
Target employers already enrolled in E-Verify
Storage Engineer positions often sit inside infrastructure or IT ops teams at companies that may not have sponsored OPT students before. Confirm E-Verify enrollment directly with HR before investing time in an application, since hiring you without it violates your STEM OPT terms.
Align your I-983 training plan to storage-specific competencies
Your I-983 must connect learning objectives to your STEM degree, so list concrete competencies like SAN architecture, RAID configuration, or cloud storage protocols rather than generic IT goals. A vague training plan is the most common reason DSOs send I-983s back for revision.
Search Migrate Mate for storage roles at E-Verify employers
Filter by job title and work authorization type on Migrate Mate to surface Storage Engineer openings at companies already enrolled in E-Verify. This removes the guesswork of vetting employers one by one after you've already applied.
Use OFLC Wage Search to benchmark storage engineer pay
Your employer's LCA must certify a wage at or above the DOL prevailing wage for your specific role and location. Pull the Level I through Level IV figures from OFLC Wage Search before negotiating, so you know whether an offer meets the legal floor for your experience tier.
Plan your cap-gap window around H-1B filing season
If you're transitioning from STEM OPT to H-1B visa, your work authorization continues automatically during cap-gap if your employer files before your OPT EAD expires on April 1. Confirm with USCIS guidance that your employer's petition reaches USCIS before that date, not just that it's been prepared.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Storage Engineer role qualify for STEM OPT?
Yes, if two conditions are met. First, your degree must appear on the STEM Designated Degree Program List maintained by USCIS, with computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, and information systems being the most common qualifying fields. Second, the role must provide training related to that STEM field. O*NET classifies Storage Engineers under computer and information technology occupations, which supports the connection between a qualifying degree and the position.
What does my employer need to do to hire me on STEM OPT?
Your employer must be enrolled in E-Verify and co-sign your I-983 training plan before your STEM OPT extension begins. The I-983 requires them to describe the specific learning objectives, supervision structure, and how the role connects to your STEM degree. If the employer isn't enrolled in E-Verify, they cannot legally employ you under STEM OPT, regardless of how strong the job offer is.
How do I find Storage Engineer jobs where the employer is already enrolled in E-Verify?
Migrate Mate surfaces Storage Engineer roles at employers enrolled in E-Verify, so you can identify STEM OPT-compatible opportunities without confirming enrollment manually with every company. This is especially useful for storage and infrastructure positions at mid-size firms, which may have E-Verify enrollment but don't advertise it in job postings.
What goes into the I-983 training plan for a Storage Engineer?
The I-983 must document learning objectives that tie directly to your STEM degree, the supervision arrangement, and how the employer will evaluate your progress. For Storage Engineer roles, strong I-983 entries reference technical competencies like SAN management, data replication, backup architecture, or cloud storage integration. Generic entries like 'gain experience in IT' are frequently returned for revision by DSOs and can delay your extension start date.
What happens to my STEM OPT status if my Storage Engineer contract ends early?
You have a 60-day grace period after your employment ends to find a new qualifying position, transfer to a different immigration status, or depart the country. You must report the end of employment to your DSO through SEVIS. If you secure a new role within the grace period, your DSO updates your I-20 with the new employer's information and a revised I-983 must be submitted before you begin work.
