AI Forward Deployed Engineer
A job at TSMC Arizona offers an opportunity to work at the most advanced semiconductor fab in the United States. TSMC Arizona’s first fab will operate its leading-edge semiconductor process technology (N4 process), starting production in the first half of 2025. The second fab will utilize its leading edge N3 and N2 process technology and be operational in 2028. The recently announced third fab will manufacture chips using 2nm or even more advanced process technology, with production starting by the end of the decade. America’s leading technology companies are ready to rely on TSMC Arizona for the next generations of chips that will power the digital future.
As an AI Forward Deployed Engineer, you will demonstrate a strong sense of reliability and enthusiasm and will possess an attitude that embodies our core values – Integrity, Commitment, Innovation and Customer Trust.
As an AI Forward Deployed Engineer, you will work at the intersection of advanced artificial intelligence and semiconductor manufacturing. You will be deployed directly to the "front lines" of TSMC Arizona's operations, embedding yourself within business and engineering teams to deeply understand their domain-specific challenges. Armed with state-of-the-art AI tools, you will rapidly design, prototype, and validate solutions, turning complex operational pain points into agile, functional AI applications. Your work will bridge the gap between cutting-edge AI technology and real-world fab execution.
Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with engineering, manufacturing, and business units to deeply understand their daily operations, complex domain knowledge, and workflow bottlenecks.
- Design and rapidly build functional AI prototypes and Proof-of-Concepts (PoCs) using modern Generative AI, Large Language Models (LLMs), RAG architectures, and AI agents to address domain-specific needs.
- Leverage low-code/no-code AI platforms, APIs, and modern rapid-application frameworks to quickly validate and iterate solutions in close collaboration with end-users.
- Conduct agile testing and performance evaluation on prototypes to ensure feasibility, accuracy, and business value within tight feedback loops.
- Partner with core IT and MLOps teams to transition successful "forward-deployed" prototypes into secure, scalable, and production-ready enterprise systems.
- Research, evaluate, and adopt emerging AI tools, open-source libraries, and methodologies to continuously accelerate the team’s prototyping speed.
- Maintain detailed technical documentation and user guides for validated prototypes to support seamless handovers and future productization.
Minimum Qualifications/Requirements:
Education:
- Bachelor's degree, preferably in Computer Science, Management Information Systems, Information Systems, Data Science, Industrial Engineering or a related engineering field or minimum 3 years' experience in software development and systems integration.
Technical Skills:
- Solid understanding of software engineering fundamentals and agile development methodologies.
- Strong programming skills in implementation (essential for AI integration) and familiarity with web/app prototyping frameworks (e.g., Streamlit, Gradio, FastAPI, or Node.js).
- Hands-on experience or a strong project portfolio in utilizing Generative AI tools, APIs (e.g., OpenAI, Anthropic), and orchestrating frameworks (e.g., LangChain, LlamaIndex, or Auto-GPT).
- Familiarity with basic database systems (SQL/NoSQL) and vector databases (e.g., Pinecone, Milvus, or Chroma).
Interpersonal Skills:
- High learning agility with the ability to quickly grasp complex semiconductor manufacturing concepts, engineering workflows, and business logic.
- Highly proactive, resourceful, and passionate about using creative, cutting-edge AI tools to solve practical problems rapidly.
- Excellent communication and collaborative skills to build trust with diverse business stakeholders and translate their needs into technical solutions.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to sit for extended periods while working at a computer.
- Ability to use a computer, keyboard, and mouse for prolonged periods.

Verify your CIP code matches engineering
Check that your degree's CIP code appears on the STEM Designated Degree Program List published by ICE. Forward Deployed Engineer roles typically align with computer science, computer engineering, or systems engineering codes. A mismatch disqualifies you regardless of your job duties.
Confirm E-Verify enrollment before accepting offers
Ask the recruiter for the company's E-Verify Employer ID or have HR confirm enrollment in writing. USCIS requires your employer to be enrolled before your STEM OPT extension begins, not just before onboarding. Don't wait until the offer stage to check.
Build a training plan around engineering deliverables
Your I-983 training plan must list specific learning objectives tied to your STEM degree. For forward deployed roles, frame objectives around systems integration, technical implementation, or applied software engineering rather than generic customer-facing tasks, which can draw DSO scrutiny.
Target companies with active federal contracts
Federal contractors are legally required to use E-Verify for all employees on covered contracts, making them reliable STEM OPT sponsors. Searching for forward deployed roles at defense, infrastructure, or government technology firms narrows your list to inherently compliant employers.
Search STEM OPT roles on Migrate Mate
Filter by E-Verify enrollment on Migrate Mate to surface Senior Forward Deployed Engineer openings at confirmed STEM OPT sponsors. Migrate Mate flags employers verified through E-Verify, removing the manual confirmation step you'd otherwise need to do with each recruiter.
Plan your cap-gap window around offer timing
If your OPT expires while an H-1B visa petition is pending for October 1, cap-gap extends your authorization automatically. For forward deployed roles with intensive onboarding periods, aligning your offer start date to account for this 60-day window prevents gaps in billable assignment.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Senior Forward Deployed Engineer role qualify for STEM OPT?
Yes, if your employer is enrolled in E-Verify and your underlying degree carries a STEM-designated CIP code recognized by ICE. The role itself must also connect directly to your field of study. Forward deployed engineering work typically aligns with computer science, systems engineering, or software engineering degrees, all of which qualify.
What goes into the I-983 training plan for this role?
Your I-983 must list specific learning goals tied to your STEM degree, not just job duties. For Senior Forward Deployed Engineer positions, document objectives like deploying and integrating software systems, applying engineering methodologies in production environments, or building technical expertise in customer infrastructure. Generic goals like 'improve communication skills' don't satisfy USCIS training plan standards.
How do I confirm my employer is enrolled in E-Verify?
Ask HR directly for the company's E-Verify Employer ID number, or request written confirmation that the specific hiring entity is enrolled. Enrollment must be active before your STEM OPT extension start date. Some large companies enroll subsidiaries separately, so confirm at the entity level, not just the parent company.
Where can I find Senior Forward Deployed Engineer jobs that sponsor STEM OPT?
Migrate Mate filters job listings by E-Verify enrollment, so you can search specifically for Senior Forward Deployed Engineer roles at employers already verified to support STEM OPT. This removes the step of manually confirming compliance with each recruiter and surfaces only the employers whose enrollment is already confirmed.
What happens to my STEM OPT authorization if my H-1B is selected in the lottery?
If your OPT expires between April 1 and September 30 while a timely-filed H-1B cap-subject petition is pending, cap-gap extends your authorization through September 30. For forward deployed roles with project-based assignments, this matters because a status gap mid-project can disrupt your deployment schedule and billing. USCIS issues an updated I-20 reflecting the cap-gap extension.
