Verify your CIP code before applying
Check that your degree's CIP code appears on the STEM Designated Degree Program List published by DHS. Information Systems, Computer Science, and Industrial Engineering codes commonly support ERP Consultant roles, but Management Information Systems classifications vary by institution.
Confirm E-Verify enrollment before accepting offers
Ask recruiters directly whether the hiring entity, not just the parent company, is enrolled in E-Verify. Subsidiaries and staffing agencies sometimes operate under separate EINs, so the specific legal employer on your offer letter must have active E-Verify participation.
Align your I-983 training plan to ERP deliverables
Your I-983 must connect training objectives to specific ERP modules, implementation phases, or functional areas you'll work in. Vague plans citing 'general IT experience' invite DSO pushback. Tie each learning goal to a measurable outcome, such as completing a go-live cycle or configuring a specific business process.
Target consulting firms with established OPT onboarding
Use Migrate Mate to filter ERP Consultant roles at employers who have filed STEM OPT training plans before. Firms with prior OPT hires have HR workflows already built for I-9 reverification and the 60-day reporting cycle, which reduces delays between your offer letter and your start date.
Use the OFLC Wage Search to negotiate confidently
Look up the prevailing wage for ERP Consultant roles in your target metro using the OFLC Wage Search before any offer conversation. Knowing the DOL wage level for your SOC code and location lets you identify whether an offer meets the floor required if your employer later files an LCA for H-1B visa sponsorship.
File your STEM OPT extension 90 days before OPT expires
USCIS recommends submitting your I-765 extension application at least 90 days before your current OPT EAD expires. If your application is filed on time and remains pending, a 180-day cap-gap provision keeps your work authorization intact while USCIS processes the request.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does an ERP Consultant role qualify for STEM OPT?
It depends on your degree, not the job title alone. USCIS evaluates STEM OPT eligibility based on your degree's CIP code appearing on the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List. Degrees in Computer Science, Information Systems, Industrial Engineering, or Management Information Systems typically qualify. Your DSO confirms eligibility by matching your degree to an approved CIP code before recommending the extension to USCIS.
What E-Verify requirement applies to my ERP Consultant employer?
Your employer must be enrolled in E-Verify as a condition of hiring you on STEM OPT. This applies to the specific legal entity listed on your offer letter, not just the corporate parent or affiliated entities. You can verify enrollment status through the E-Verify employer search tool on the E-Verify website. Employers who are not enrolled cannot lawfully employ STEM OPT students, and your DSO will require proof of enrollment before signing your I-20 recommendation.
What should my I-983 training plan include for an ERP Consultant position?
Your I-983 must describe how the ERP Consultant role provides practical training directly related to your STEM degree. Include the specific ERP platform you'll work on, the modules or functional areas covered, measurable learning objectives tied to each phase of the engagement, and your supervisor's qualifications. USCIS and your DSO expect the training plan to connect your coursework to on-the-job learning, so generic IT descriptions are insufficient.
How does the cap-gap rule protect my work authorization during H-1B processing?
If your employer files an H-1B petition on your behalf before your OPT EAD expires, the cap-gap provision automatically extends your F-1 status and work authorization through September 30 of that fiscal year. Your STEM OPT EAD technically lapses, but the cap-gap extension, reflected in an updated I-20 from your DSO, covers the gap between your EAD expiry and the H-1B start date. You must maintain valid F-1 status throughout for the extension to apply.
Where can I find ERP Consultant jobs that accept STEM OPT students?
Migrate Mate filters ERP Consultant listings specifically for F-1 STEM OPT candidates and shows employers with E-Verify enrollment and prior OPT hiring history. Searching by role and work authorization status on Migrate Mate surfaces positions where the hiring process is already structured to accommodate the I-983 training plan, 60-day reporting requirements, and EAD verification steps that come with STEM OPT employment.
