Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding STEM OPT Authorization as an Applications Manager
Verify your CIP code before applying
Pull your degree's Classification of Instructional Programs code from your transcripts and confirm it appears on the official STEM Designated Degree Program List. Applications Manager roles require a direct STEM nexus, and a mismatched CIP code will sink your I-983 approval.
Check E-Verify enrollment before accepting offers
STEM OPT employers must be enrolled in E-Verify before your extension starts. Ask hiring managers directly whether the company is currently enrolled, not just registered. An employer who completed enrollment years ago but let it lapse cannot sponsor your extension.
Target employers with active LCA filings for technical managers
DOL Labor Condition Application data shows which companies regularly sponsor work authorization for applications and systems management roles. Searching this data through Migrate Mate surfaces employers who have already navigated the process for roles matching your background.
Frame your I-983 training plan around systems outcomes
Your I-983 must connect your Applications Manager duties to specific STEM learning objectives, not just job responsibilities. Document how you'll apply engineering or computer science principles to software lifecycle decisions, architecture reviews, or systems integration, not generic management tasks.
Time your extension filing against your OPT expiration date
Your DSO must recommend the STEM OPT extension in SEVIS, and USCIS must receive your I-765 at least 90 days before your current EAD expires. Applications Manager hiring cycles run long, so factor in a 10-to-12 week offer-to-start timeline when targeting roles.
Benchmark your offer against OFLC prevailing wage data
Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up prevailing wages for Applications Manager roles under the relevant Standard Occupational Classification code in your target metro area. An offer below the Level I or II threshold can signal E-Verify and STEM OPT compliance risk before the process begins.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does an Applications Manager role qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
It depends on your degree field and how the role is structured. If you hold a STEM degree with a qualifying CIP code and your Applications Manager duties directly apply that technical knowledge, such as overseeing enterprise software systems, managing application architecture, or leading technical implementation projects, the role can qualify. Your DSO will assess the connection when approving your I-983 training plan.
What STEM degrees support a STEM OPT extension for this role?
Degrees in computer science, information systems, software engineering, computer engineering, and related fields commonly support Applications Manager STEM OPT extensions. The degree must appear on the STEM Designated Degree Program List by CIP code. A degree in business administration or general management typically will not qualify, even if your role is heavily technical.
How do I confirm my employer is enrolled in E-Verify before my extension starts?
Ask the employer for their E-Verify company ID number and verify active enrollment status through the E-Verify employer search tool. Enrollment must be active at the time your STEM OPT extension begins, not just at the time of your job offer. Your DSO cannot approve the I-983 for an employer that is not currently enrolled.
What goes into the I-983 training plan for an Applications Manager position?
The I-983 must describe specific learning objectives tied to your STEM degree, the supervision structure, and how your manager will evaluate your progress. For an Applications Manager role, this means documenting how you'll apply computer science or engineering principles to decisions about application infrastructure, system reliability, software procurement, or technical team leadership, with formal evaluations at 12-month intervals.
Where can I find Applications Manager jobs where employers are already prepared to support STEM OPT?
Migrate Mate filters Applications Manager listings for employers with verified E-Verify enrollment and active work authorization sponsorship history, so you're not cold-applying to companies unfamiliar with STEM OPT requirements. This matters because STEM OPT compliance involves employer obligations around I-983 reporting and SEVIS updates that many employers haven't handled before.
