Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding STEM OPT Authorization as a Technology Consultant
Verify your degree's CIP code eligibility
Cross-check your degree against the USCIS STEM Designated Degree Program List before applying. Information systems, computer science, and engineering management degrees qualify, but business-adjacent programs sometimes don't, confirm your exact CIP code with your DSO first.
Filter employers by E-Verify enrollment status
Your STEM OPT employer must be enrolled in E-Verify, no exceptions. Use Migrate Mate to search Technology Consultant roles filtered to verified E-Verify employers, cutting out firms that can't legally support your extension from the start.
Target consulting firms with prior LCA filings
Consulting firms that have filed Labor Condition Applications for technology roles already understand prevailing wage obligations and visa workflows. Search DOL OFLC disclosure data to identify firms with active LCA filings in your target metro area and job category.
File your I-983 training plan before your OPT end date
Your employer must sign the I-983 training plan outlining how the Technology Consultant role relates to your STEM degree. Submit it to your DSO at least 90 days before your initial OPT expires to avoid a gap in work authorization.
Ask recruiters about cap-gap coverage during offer negotiation
If your employer plans to sponsor H-1B visa after STEM OPT, confirm they'll file during the March registration window. A timely H-1B petition automatically extends your work authorization through September 30 under cap-gap rules, which affects your start date negotiations.
Benchmark your offer against OFLC prevailing wage levels
Technology Consultant roles span multiple wage levels under DOL classifications. Use the OFLC Wage Search to check the prevailing wage for your specific SOC code and work location so you can evaluate whether an offer meets the threshold your future H-1B will require.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Technology Consultant role qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
Technology Consultant positions qualify for the 24-month STEM OPT extension when your degree falls under a USCIS-recognized STEM CIP code and the employer is enrolled in E-Verify. Common qualifying degrees include computer science, information systems, engineering, and management information systems. Confirm your degree's CIP code with your DSO before accepting an offer.
How do I confirm my employer is enrolled in E-Verify before signing an offer?
Ask the recruiter or HR contact directly whether the company is enrolled in E-Verify and request their E-Verify company ID or a screenshot of their enrollment status. You can also ask your DSO to help verify enrollment. STEM OPT regulations prohibit working for any employer not actively enrolled in E-Verify, so confirm this before your start date.
What goes into the I-983 training plan for a Technology Consultant position?
The I-983 requires your employer to describe how the Technology Consultant role directly relates to your STEM degree, identify learning objectives, specify supervision arrangements, and explain how the position advances your practical skills. Your employer's HR or immigration team completes most of the form, but you sign it alongside your DSO. Keep a copy, as USCIS may request it during any audit.
Can cap-gap coverage protect me if my STEM OPT expires during H-1B processing?
Cap-gap automatically extends your F-1 work authorization if your employer files an H-1B petition before your STEM OPT end date and you're selected in the lottery. The extension runs through September 30 of that fiscal year. If the petition isn't filed or isn't selected, cap-gap doesn't apply, so discuss your employer's H-1B filing timeline with them well before your STEM OPT expires.
Where can I find Technology Consultant jobs at employers who support STEM OPT?
Migrate Mate lists Technology Consultant roles at employers with verified E-Verify enrollment and LCA filing history, so you can focus your search on firms already set up to support your STEM OPT extension. Filtering by employer verification status upfront saves significant time compared to discovering eligibility gaps after an offer is extended.
