Verify your CIP code matches STEM eligibility
Check your degree's Classification of Instructional Programs code against the DHS STEM OPT designated degree list. Environmental health, occupational safety, and industrial hygiene programs each have distinct CIP codes, and your DSO confirms eligibility before filing your STEM OPT extension.
Confirm E-Verify enrollment before accepting offers
Ask hiring managers for their E-Verify company ID or search the E-Verify employer search tool directly. CIH roles often sit inside environmental consulting firms or manufacturing safety teams where E-Verify enrollment varies widely by location and subsidiary.
Target employers with active OSHA compliance programs
Companies subject to OSHA Process Safety Management or VPP participation typically maintain dedicated industrial hygiene staff and are accustomed to structured training plans, which makes satisfying your I-983 requirements more straightforward than at smaller worksites.
Build your I-983 training plan around CIH exam domains
Structure your training plan learning objectives around the ABIH CIH examination content outline. Mapping your workplace learning goals to chemical hazard recognition, exposure assessment, and control verification gives your DSO and employer concrete milestones to document.
Use Migrate Mate to filter for E-Verify employers posting CIH roles
Search Migrate Mate to find industrial hygienist positions at employers already verified as E-Verify enrolled. Filtering by sponsorship history saves you from applying to firms that can't legally onboard STEM OPT workers before your current EAD expires.
Negotiate your start date around USCIS processing windows
File your STEM OPT extension application no later than 90 days before your initial OPT EAD expires. If your extension is pending when you start, your cap-gap protection covers authorized employment only if your employer is already E-Verify enrolled at the time you begin work.

Find Certified Industrial Hygienist JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does my degree qualify me for the STEM OPT extension as a Certified Industrial Hygienist?
It depends on your specific degree program and its CIP code. Degrees in environmental health science, occupational safety and health, or industrial hygiene commonly appear on the DHS STEM OPT designated degree list, but general health sciences or public health degrees may not qualify. Your DSO at your school can confirm whether your program's CIP code is on the approved list before you apply for the 24-month extension.
Does my employer need to be enrolled in E-Verify to hire me on STEM OPT?
Yes. E-Verify enrollment is a federal requirement for all STEM OPT employers, and your employer must be actively enrolled before you begin work, not just when they file paperwork. Many environmental consulting firms and manufacturing companies are enrolled company-wide, but subsidiaries or satellite offices sometimes maintain separate E-Verify accounts, so confirm the specific hiring entity is enrolled, not just the parent company.
What should my I-983 training plan include for a Certified Industrial Hygienist role?
Your I-983 must describe the practical training you'll receive, how it relates to your STEM degree, and how your employer will supervise and evaluate your progress. For a CIH role, that typically means documenting learning objectives tied to exposure assessment methods, hazard recognition, sampling protocols, and control strategy development. Your employer's designated supervisor signs the plan, and your DSO must authorize it before you begin the extension period.
How does cap-gap protection apply if my H-1B is selected in the lottery while I'm on STEM OPT?
If your employer files an H-1B petition on your behalf before your STEM OPT EAD expires and USCIS selects it in the lottery, cap-gap protection automatically extends your work authorization through September 30 of that fiscal year. Your employer must be E-Verify enrolled for cap-gap to apply. USCIS provides guidance on cap-gap eligibility, and your DSO updates your I-20 to reflect the extended authorization period.
Where can I find Certified Industrial Hygienist jobs where employers are already set up to hire STEM OPT workers?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for F-1 STEM OPT students and surfaces CIH and environmental health safety roles at employers with verified sponsorship and E-Verify enrollment history. Searching there filters out companies that aren't equipped to onboard OPT workers, so you spend your application time on positions where the employer infrastructure is already in place for your authorization status.
