Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding STEM OPT Authorization as a Data Management Specialist
Verify your CIP code covers data management
Check that your degree's CIP code appears on the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List. Computer and Information Sciences (11.xx) and Management Information Systems (52.12xx) commonly qualify, but Information Technology degrees vary by institution.
Confirm E-Verify enrollment before applying
Before your interview stage, search the E-Verify employer search tool to confirm the company is enrolled. Employers who aren't enrolled cannot legally hire you on a STEM OPT extension, regardless of how willing they are to sponsor.
Build an I-983 training plan around data governance tasks
Your training plan must list specific learning objectives tied to your STEM degree, not just job duties. For Data Management Specialist roles, map objectives like data quality frameworks and metadata standards directly to coursework from your degree program.
Target employers with active DOL LCA filings
Use Migrate Mate to filter Data Management Specialist roles by employers with verified DOL Labor Condition Application filings. This signals the employer already understands work authorization requirements and has filed for similar roles before.
Request an offer letter specifying your OPT end date
Ask the hiring team to include your OPT EAD expiration and the STEM extension start date in your written offer. This protects you if onboarding is delayed and ensures HR initiates the E-Verify I-9 process on your actual start date.
Apply 90 days before your initial OPT expires
USCIS allows you to file your STEM OPT extension application up to 90 days before your EAD expires. Filing early gives you a cap-gap buffer and keeps you authorized to work while USCIS adjudicates, avoiding any gap in employment for your data management role.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Data Management Specialist role qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
It depends on whether your employer's job description requires a STEM degree and whether your degree's CIP code is on the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List. Most Data Management Specialist positions that require a degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related technical field qualify. Your DSO confirms eligibility based on your specific degree, not the job title alone.
How do I find Data Management Specialist employers enrolled in E-Verify?
You can search the E-Verify employer database directly to confirm enrollment before applying. Migrate Mate also surfaces Data Management Specialist roles specifically from employers with verified work authorization filing history, so you're not spending time on applications that will stall at the E-Verify step.
What goes into an I-983 training plan for a data management role?
The I-983 must include a list of learning objectives directly tied to your STEM degree, not just a copy of your job description. For a Data Management Specialist, that means documenting how tasks like data pipeline design, quality control frameworks, or database schema management connect to specific courses or competencies from your degree program. Your employer's HR or legal team signs off, and your DSO must approve it.
Can I start working as a Data Management Specialist while my STEM OPT extension is pending?
Yes, if you filed your extension application before your initial OPT EAD expired, you're covered by an automatic 180-day cap-gap authorization. You can continue working for the same employer in the same role during this period. If you want to change employers while your application is pending, talk to your DSO first, since that can affect your authorization status.
What STEM degrees make me eligible for a Data Management Specialist STEM OPT extension?
Degrees in Computer and Information Sciences, Management Information Systems, Data Science, and Information Technology from programs listed under eligible CIP codes on the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List are the most common qualifying credentials for this role. Applied Statistics and Operations Research degrees can also qualify depending on the specific job duties. Check O*NET for the occupation's typical education requirements and cross-reference with your degree's CIP code to confirm alignment.
