Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding STEM OPT Authorization in New Grad
Verify your CIP code before applying
Check that your degree's Classification of Instructional Programs code appears on the STEM Designated Degree Program List published by USCIS. Not all science or engineering degrees qualify, and your DSO confirms eligibility before filing.
Filter for E-Verify enrolled employers early
Your STEM OPT extension is only valid with an E-Verify employer. Search Migrate Mate to find New Grad roles filtered by E-Verify enrollment status, so you're not discovering the problem after an offer is made.
Request the I-983 before your start date
The I-983 training plan must be signed by your employer and submitted to your DSO before you begin work on STEM OPT. Ask hiring managers to confirm this step during the offer stage, not after onboarding.
Cross-reference the role against O*NET
Look up the job title in O*NET to confirm the SOC code maps to a STEM field. USCIS and your DSO use this classification to validate that the role provides training directly related to your degree.
Track your 60-day unemployment cap by role start date
STEM OPT allows a combined 150 days of unemployment across your full OPT period, but gaps between jobs count against it. Time your New Grad job search so any gap between graduation and your first role stays well under that threshold.
Confirm cap-gap coverage if your OPT expires during hiring
If your employer files an H-1B visa petition before your OPT expires and you're selected in the lottery, cap-gap extends your work authorization through September 30. Confirm your OPT expiration date with your DSO as soon as you receive an offer.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do all New Grad employers qualify for STEM OPT?
No. Your employer must be enrolled in E-Verify to sponsor your STEM OPT extension. This is a federal requirement, not a company policy. Before accepting a New Grad offer, confirm E-Verify enrollment directly with HR or through the E-Verify employer search tool. A non-enrolled employer cannot support your 24-month extension regardless of role or degree match.
Which STEM degrees qualify for the 24-month OPT extension in New Grad roles?
Your degree must appear on the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List, which is organized by Classification of Instructional Programs codes. Degrees in computer science, electrical engineering, data science, and biology typically qualify, but not every science major does. Your DSO can confirm your specific CIP code. The New Grad role itself must also be directly related to your field of study.
What is the I-983 training plan, and when does the employer need to sign it?
The I-983 is a formal training plan that outlines how your New Grad role relates to your STEM degree and what skills you'll develop. Your employer and DSO must both sign it before your STEM OPT extension begins. It also requires a formal evaluation at the midpoint and end of the extension. USCIS can audit the plan, so it needs to accurately describe your actual job duties.
How do I find New Grad jobs where the employer is already set up for STEM OPT?
Search on Migrate Mate, which filters New Grad listings by E-Verify enrollment so you can focus on roles where the extension is actually possible. You can also ask recruiters directly whether the company is enrolled in E-Verify before investing time in the interview process. Larger companies with engineering or tech teams are more consistently enrolled, but always verify.
What happens to my STEM OPT status if my New Grad offer is rescinded after I've already left my previous role?
You're allowed up to 150 total days of unemployment across your entire OPT period, including any initial OPT time. A rescinded offer starts that clock running. Report the change to your DSO immediately, as they must update your SEVIS record. You have 60 days from losing employment to either secure a new E-Verify employer, transfer programs, or depart the country before falling out of status.
