Verify your CIP code matches health informatics
Not every IT or business degree qualifies for STEM OPT. Check that your program's CIP code falls under an approved STEM category, health informatics (51.27), computer science (11), or information systems (52.12), before targeting Epic Analyst roles.
Confirm E-Verify enrollment before accepting offers
Your employer must be enrolled in E-Verify to sponsor your STEM OPT extension. Ask the hiring manager or HR directly before your final interview, not after you sign. Health systems and Epic implementation partners vary in enrollment status.
Target Epic-certified implementation partners early
Epic's certified consulting partners handle go-lives and upgrades across hundreds of health systems and hire analysts year-round. These firms tend to have established STEM OPT onboarding processes because of their high volume of international technical hires.
Build your I-983 training plan around Epic modules
Your I-983 must connect your daily Epic Analyst work to your STEM degree. Document specific technical tasks like build configuration, workflow analysis, or interface testing, and map them to learning objectives from your program's curriculum before your DSO submits the plan.
Use Migrate Mate to identify E-Verify employers hiring analysts
Search Epic Applications Analyst roles on Migrate Mate to filter for employers already enrolled in E-Verify. This cuts the research time you'd otherwise spend manually cross-referencing job postings with E-Verify's employer search database.
Time your extension request before OPT expiration
File your STEM OPT extension request with USCIS at least 90 days before your initial 12-month OPT end date. A timely filing triggers automatic cap-gap protection, keeping you authorized to work while USCIS processes the I-765.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does an Epic Applications Analyst role qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
Yes, if your degree is in a STEM-designated field such as health informatics, computer science, information systems, or biomedical engineering. The role must directly apply that degree's technical content. Your DSO will confirm your program's CIP code qualifies before updating your I-20 for the extension. Roles focused purely on training or project management without a technical build component may face closer scrutiny.
What E-Verify requirement applies to my STEM OPT employer?
Your employer must be actively enrolled in E-Verify for your STEM OPT extension to be valid. This applies to the specific legal entity that employs you, not just the parent company or a related subsidiary. Verify enrollment directly with HR before accepting an offer. If the employer is not enrolled, your DSO cannot approve the I-983 training plan and your extension cannot proceed.
What should my I-983 training plan include for an Epic Analyst position?
Your I-983 must describe how your day-to-day Epic work applies your STEM degree. Include specific activities such as application build, workflow configuration, go-live support, or data validation, and tie each to a learning goal from your academic program. Both you and your supervisor sign the plan, and your DSO must approve it before USCIS processes your I-765 extension application.
How does cap-gap protection work if I transition from STEM OPT to H-1B?
If your employer files an H-1B visa petition on your behalf before your STEM OPT expires and USCIS selects it in the lottery, cap-gap protection automatically extends your work authorization through September 30 of that fiscal year. You can continue working as an Epic Analyst during this period without interruption. USCIS must receive the petition before your STEM OPT end date for cap-gap to apply.
Where can I find Epic Applications Analyst jobs that support STEM OPT students?
Migrate Mate lists Epic Applications Analyst roles filtered for employers enrolled in E-Verify, which is the first practical requirement for any STEM OPT extension. Searching there saves you from applying to positions where the employer isn't set up to support your authorization. You can also check the O*NET occupation profile for this role to understand the technical skill requirements that strengthen your I-983 training plan.
