Verify your CIP code matches STEM eligibility
Cross-check your degree's CIP code against the official STEM Designated Degree Program list before applying. Degrees in health informatics, computer science, or information systems commonly qualify, but the exact CIP code on your transcript determines eligibility, not the department name.
Confirm E-Verify enrollment before accepting offers
Ask recruiters to confirm their E-Verify Company ID number during the offer stage. Healthcare systems often use staffing intermediaries or consulting arms that operate as separate legal entities, and only the specific entity signing your offer letter needs to be enrolled.
Target health systems with active Epic certifications
Hospitals undergoing Epic go-lives or module expansions have the strongest near-term demand for analysts. Filtering by Epic certification status and implementation phase narrows your search to employers who need your skills now, not after a procurement decision.
Build your I-983 training plan around Epic module specialization
Work with your DSO to structure your I-983 learning objectives around a specific Epic module, such as Resolute, Beacon, or Stork. Concrete training goals tied to deliverables make the plan more defensible and align your development with what employers actually measure.
Search for STEM OPT-ready Epic roles on Migrate Mate
Filter your job search on Migrate Mate to surface Epic Analyst roles at E-Verify-enrolled employers. The platform surfaces DOL Labor Condition Application filing data so you can identify which health systems have a demonstrated pattern of sponsoring visa holders in analyst roles.
Time your H-1B registration around your OPT end date
If your STEM OPT expires on or after April 1, cap-gap protection extends your authorization through September 30 while an H-1B petition is pending. Coordinate your start date and employer filing timeline with USCIS processing windows to avoid any gap in work authorization.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does an Epic Analyst role qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
It depends on your degree, not the job title. To qualify, your degree must appear on the STEM Designated Degree Program list and carry an eligible CIP code, typically in computer science, information systems, health informatics, or a related field. The role itself does not need to be classified as a STEM occupation independently. Confirm your CIP code with your DSO before submitting your extension application to USCIS.
Does my Epic Analyst employer need to be enrolled in E-Verify?
Yes. E-Verify enrollment is a hard requirement for any employer hiring a STEM OPT student. Large health systems are usually enrolled, but implementation consulting firms and staffing agencies vary. Ask the specific legal entity signing your offer letter to confirm their E-Verify Company ID before you accept. USCIS can deny your extension if your employer is not enrolled at the time of filing.
What should my I-983 training plan include for an Epic Analyst position?
Your I-983 should tie your learning objectives directly to the Epic modules you'll support, such as clinical documentation, order management, or billing workflows. Include measurable goals, your supervisor's oversight responsibilities, and how the role applies knowledge from your STEM degree. Vague plans that describe general IT work without connecting to your academic background are more likely to draw scrutiny from USCIS during an audit.
How do I find Epic Analyst jobs at employers who sponsor visa holders?
Migrate Mate filters Epic Analyst roles by E-Verify enrollment status and surfaces DOL Labor Condition Application data, showing which employers have filed LCAs for analyst roles in the past. This helps you focus on health systems and consulting firms with a documented history of sponsoring F-1 and H-1B workers, rather than applying broadly and asking about sponsorship after an offer.
What happens to my STEM OPT authorization if I want to transition to H-1B sponsorship?
If your employer files an H-1B petition on your behalf before your STEM OPT expires and your OPT end date falls on or after April 1, cap-gap rules automatically extend your work authorization through September 30 of that year. You can continue working as an Epic Analyst during this period. If the petition is denied or withdrawn, your cap-gap protection ends and you must stop working. Coordinate filing timelines carefully with your employer and DSO.
