Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding STEM OPT Authorization as an Implementation Specialist
Verify your degree's STEM CIP code
Check your school's Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) record to confirm your degree program is listed under a STEM CIP code. Not all information systems or business technology degrees automatically qualify, so confirm with your DSO before applying.
Filter employers by E-Verify enrollment status
Before applying, confirm the employer is actively enrolled in E-Verify, not just registered. An employer who completed enrollment years ago but never re-verified their status can create compliance problems after you accept an offer. Ask HR directly and request their E-Verify company ID.
Frame your I-983 around system rollout cycles
Implementation Specialist roles involve phased project delivery, so structure your I-983 training plan around measurable milestones like go-live dates, user adoption metrics, and configuration sprints. Generic training plans are a common reason USCIS issues requests for evidence on STEM OPT extensions.
Target companies with dedicated onboarding teams
Employers running structured implementation practices, such as those deploying ERP, CRM, or SaaS platforms at scale, already understand project-based work authorization. Use Migrate Mate to search for Implementation Specialist roles at employers with documented STEM OPT hiring history.
Check prevailing wage before negotiating your offer
Your employer will certify your wage against DOL prevailing wage levels when filing work authorization documentation. Run your job title and location through the OFLC Wage Search before your offer conversation so you can confirm the offer meets the required threshold for your region.
Start your STEM OPT extension 90 days early
USCIS allows you to file your STEM OPT extension application up to 90 days before your initial OPT expires. Filing late puts you at risk of an authorization gap between roles, which is especially disruptive mid-implementation project. Work with your DSO to submit Form I-765 well inside that window.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does an Implementation Specialist role qualify for STEM OPT?
It depends on your degree, not just the job title. If your degree is in computer science, information systems, engineering, or another STEM CIP code field, and your day-to-day work involves applying that technical knowledge, the role can qualify. Your DSO reviews the connection between your degree and duties when approving your I-983 training plan, so document how configuration, data migration, or systems integration work maps to your coursework.
Is my employer required to be enrolled in E-Verify for STEM OPT?
Yes. E-Verify enrollment is a federal requirement for any employer hiring a STEM OPT student on the 24-month extension. The employer must also sign your I-983 training plan and report material changes to your DSO within five business days. Before accepting an offer, ask the employer for their E-Verify company ID and confirm their enrollment is current, not lapsed.
What goes into an I-983 training plan for an Implementation Specialist?
Your I-983 must describe specific training goals, the skills you'll develop, and how the work relates to your STEM degree. For Implementation Specialist roles, this means detailing project phases like requirements gathering, system configuration, and post-deployment support, along with measurable outcomes. Vague descriptions like 'assist with software rollout' are not sufficient. USCIS expects concrete learning objectives tied to your degree field.
How does cap-gap protection work if I'm in an active implementation project?
Cap-gap extends your work authorization automatically if your employer files an H-1B visa petition on your behalf before your OPT expires and you're selected in the lottery. Your authorization continues through September 30 of that fiscal year, even if you're mid-project. You don't need to file anything separately, but your employer must file the H-1B petition before your OPT end date for cap-gap to apply.
Where can I find Implementation Specialist jobs that accept STEM OPT students?
Migrate Mate lists Implementation Specialist roles filtered for employers enrolled in E-Verify, which is the baseline requirement for STEM OPT hiring. You can also cross-reference the O*NET occupation profile for this role to identify which degree fields most commonly support STEM OPT eligibility, then confirm alignment with your DSO before applying to roles where the degree-to-job connection isn't obvious.
