Verify your CIP code before applying
Check your degree's CIP code against the STEM Designated Degree Program List before targeting GIS roles. Geography (45.0701), computer science, and environmental science codes are commonly eligible, but a mismatch can disqualify your extension.
Filter employers by E-Verify enrollment status
Only E-Verify-enrolled employers can hire you on STEM OPT. Use Migrate Mate to browse GIS Analyst openings already filtered for E-Verify compliance, so you don't waste applications on employers who can't legally onboard you.
Target government contractors for faster onboarding
Federal contractors are legally required to use E-Verify, making them reliable STEM OPT employers. GIS Analyst roles at agencies supporting defense, infrastructure, or environmental mapping consistently appear among E-Verify-enrolled employers with active spatial data needs.
Build your I-983 training plan around GIS competencies
Your I-983 must map training goals directly to your STEM degree. For GIS roles, document specific skills like geodatabase management, remote sensing, or Python scripting for spatial analysis. Generic training plans draw scrutiny from your DSO during the approval review.
Use the OFLC Wage Search to benchmark your offer
Your STEM OPT training plan requires compensation that reflects the role's actual duties. Run your job title and location through the OFLC Wage Search to confirm your offered salary aligns with DOL prevailing wage levels before signing any offer.
Time your extension filing to protect your cap-gap
File your STEM OPT extension application before your initial OPT EAD expires to maintain continuous work authorization. USCIS recommends filing at least 90 days before expiration. Gaps in status can interrupt active GIS projects and complicate employer compliance.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a GIS Analyst role qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
It depends on both your degree and the job itself. Your degree's CIP code must appear on the STEM Designated Degree Program List, and the GIS Analyst role must be directly related to that field of study. Geography, computer science, and environmental science degrees commonly qualify. Your DSO confirms eligibility and issues the updated I-20 before you file with USCIS.
How do I know if a GIS employer is enrolled in E-Verify?
E-Verify enrollment is a hard requirement for STEM OPT employers. You can ask the recruiter directly during the offer stage, or check through E-Verify's public search tool. Migrate Mate surfaces GIS Analyst openings from employers already verified as E-Verify participants, which removes the guesswork from your search process.
What goes into the I-983 training plan for a GIS Analyst position?
Your I-983 must describe how the GIS Analyst role provides practical training in your STEM field. Include specific learning objectives tied to your degree, such as spatial analysis, GIS software proficiency, or data visualization. Your employer signs the form and both parties report on progress at the 12-month mark and at the end of the 24-month extension.
What happens to my work authorization if my GIS employer loses E-Verify status?
If your employer loses E-Verify enrollment, your STEM OPT authorization is no longer valid at that job. USCIS requires that E-Verify enrollment remain active throughout your entire extension period. You'd need to find a new E-Verify-enrolled employer and update your training plan with your DSO before resuming authorized employment as a GIS Analyst.
Can I work as a GIS Analyst contractor or on a project basis under STEM OPT?
USCIS prohibits STEM OPT students from working as independent contractors or self-employed individuals. You must be employed directly by the E-Verify-enrolled employer named on your I-983. Project-based work is permissible if you're a W-2 employee of the sponsoring company, but staffing arrangements where a third party is your actual employer require careful review with your DSO.
