Verify your CIP code before applying
Check that your degree's CIP code appears on the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List. Surveying-related degrees typically fall under Civil Engineering or Geomatics, but your DSO confirms the exact match before you file.
Confirm E-Verify enrollment before accepting offers
Ask the hiring manager directly whether the firm is enrolled in E-Verify before you negotiate an offer. Public-works contractors and federal project primes are often already enrolled; small private survey firms frequently are not.
Target firms with active DOL LCA filing history
Use Migrate Mate to filter Land Surveyor postings by employers with verified E-Verify enrollment and DOL Labor Condition Application filing history, so you're only applying where STEM OPT sponsorship is already operationally familiar.
Build an I-983 training plan around licensure milestones
Frame your I-983 training objectives around specific learning outcomes tied to your state's Professional Land Surveyor licensure requirements. Connecting on-the-job training goals to NCEES exam preparation gives the plan concrete, verifiable benchmarks.
Use OFLC Wage Search to benchmark your offer
Pull the prevailing wage for your SOC code and county from the OFLC Wage Search before your offer conversation. STEM OPT doesn't legally require prevailing wage, but underpaying relative to local rates can complicate a future H-1B visa LCA filing.
Time your extension filing to avoid authorization gaps
Submit your STEM OPT extension application to USCIS at least 90 days before your initial OPT EAD expires. A timely filing triggers an automatic 180-day cap-gap extension so you can keep working without interruption while USCIS adjudicates.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Land Surveyor role qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
It depends on your degree, not the job title. The role itself doesn't trigger STEM OPT eligibility. Your degree's CIP code must appear on the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List. Civil Engineering, Geomatics, and Geographic Information Science degrees commonly qualify. Your DSO verifies the match and authorizes the extension through SEVIS before you file with USCIS.
Does my Land Surveyor employer need to be enrolled in E-Verify?
Yes. E-Verify enrollment is a hard requirement for STEM OPT employers, and it's the applicant's responsibility to confirm it before accepting an offer. You can verify enrollment by asking HR directly or checking the E-Verify employer search tool. Employers who are not enrolled cannot legally employ you on a STEM OPT EAD, regardless of their willingness to hire internationally.
What goes into an I-983 training plan for a Land Surveyor position?
The I-983 must document specific learning objectives tied to your STEM degree, not just a job description. For Land Surveyor roles, that typically means outlining goals around boundary analysis, geodetic control, or geospatial data processing. Your employer's supervisor signs off on the plan, and you update it with USCIS and your DSO at the 12-month midpoint. Generic plans citing only job duties are frequently flagged for revision.
What happens to my work authorization if my H-1B is selected in the lottery before my STEM OPT ends?
If your employer files an H-1B petition before your STEM OPT EAD expires and you're selected in the lottery, cap-gap provisions automatically extend your OPT work authorization through September 30 of that fiscal year. USCIS does not issue a new EAD for cap-gap; your expired EAD, I-20 extension, and I-797 receipt notice together serve as proof of continued authorization.
How do I find Land Surveyor jobs where employers already understand STEM OPT?
Search on Migrate Mate, which filters Land Surveyor postings by employers with verified E-Verify enrollment and DOL filing history. This narrows your list to firms that have already navigated OPT or H-1B sponsorship, which shortens the employer education process and reduces the risk of an offer falling through over unfamiliarity with STEM OPT compliance requirements.
