STEM OPT Mining Engineer Jobs
Mining Engineer roles qualify for STEM OPT because mining engineering sits within an eligible CIP code, giving you up to 24 months of additional work authorization beyond your initial OPT period. Your employer must be enrolled in E-Verify and sign your I-983 training plan before you start work.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding STEM OPT Authorization as a Mining Engineer
Confirm your CIP code before applying
Cross-reference your degree's CIP code against the DHS STEM OPT designated degree list before submitting applications. Mining engineering programs typically fall under CIP 14.2101, but verify with your DSO to avoid authorization gaps.
Filter jobs by E-Verify status first
Before contacting any mining company, confirm E-Verify enrollment through the E-Verify employer search. Many smaller mining operations and regional contractors aren't enrolled, which disqualifies them from hiring STEM OPT workers regardless of their interest in sponsoring you.
Use O*NET to frame your specialty occupation
Pull your occupation's O*NET profile and identify the specific technical tasks and knowledge areas listed. Mining engineers navigating I-983 training plan reviews benefit from aligning their learning objectives directly to O*NET-defined competencies for their role.
Target operations with existing H-1B filing history
Search Migrate Mate to identify mining companies that have previously filed LCAs with DOL. Employers already familiar with sponsorship requirements handle I-983 training plan compliance and USCIS reporting deadlines with far less friction than first-time sponsors.
Negotiate your I-983 training plan before your offer letter
Request a draft I-983 training plan alongside your written offer, not after you sign. Mining employers sometimes assign generic engineering development goals that don't satisfy USCIS's requirement for a direct connection between your STEM degree and your job duties.

Find Mining Engineer JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does a mining engineering degree qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
Yes, provided your degree program is listed on the DHS STEM OPT designated degree list under an eligible CIP code. Mining engineering programs typically qualify under CIP 14.2101, but you should confirm the exact CIP code assigned to your program with your DSO before applying for the extension through USCIS.
Does a mining company need to be enrolled in E-Verify to hire me on STEM OPT?
Yes. E-Verify enrollment is a hard requirement for all STEM OPT employers, without exception. Before accepting an offer, verify the company's enrollment status through the E-Verify employer search tool. Many smaller mining contractors and regional operations are not enrolled, which means they cannot legally employ STEM OPT workers even if they want to sponsor you.
What goes into the I-983 training plan for a mining engineer role?
The I-983 training plan must document how your day-to-day mining engineering duties directly relate to your STEM degree. It should outline specific learning objectives, the technical skills you'll develop, how your employer will supervise your progress, and reporting intervals. Generic engineering development goals that don't reference your degree field will draw scrutiny from USCIS during the evaluation process.
How does cap-gap work if my OPT expires before my H-1B start date?
If your employer files an H-1B petition before your OPT EAD expires and your H-1B is selected in the lottery, cap-gap automatically extends your work authorization through September 30 of that year. You can continue working as a mining engineer during this period. USCIS does not issue a new EAD for cap-gap, so keep your OPT EAD, I-20 with cap-gap notation, and the H-1B receipt notice on file.
Where can I find mining engineer jobs that accept STEM OPT students?
Use Migrate Mate to search for mining engineer roles at employers with verified E-Verify enrollment and prior DOL labor condition application history. Filtering by employers with existing sponsorship activity significantly narrows your list to companies already set up to handle STEM OPT hiring requirements, including I-983 training plan preparation and USCIS compliance reporting.
