Verify your CIP code before applying
Electrical and systems engineering degrees map to CIP codes 14.1001 and 14.0901, both STEM-designated. Confirm your specific degree CIP code with your DSO before accepting any offer, a mismatch delays your extension paperwork.
Check E-Verify status before accepting offers
Transmission engineering roles sit inside utilities, grid operators, and engineering consultancies. Not all enroll in E-Verify. Search the E-Verify employer database directly and confirm active enrollment before you sign, not after.
Target employers filing LCAs for power systems roles
Use the OFLC Wage Search to identify employers who have filed Labor Condition Applications for electrical or power systems engineer titles. Active LCA filers already understand work authorization requirements and move faster through onboarding paperwork.
Build your I-983 training plan around engineering competencies
Transmission engineers work across protection systems, load flow analysis, and substation design. Map each area to a concrete learning objective in your I-983 so USCIS can see a direct connection between your STEM degree and your daily responsibilities.
Use Migrate Mate to find STEM OPT-ready employers
Search Migrate Mate to filter Transmission Engineer openings by employers with verified E-Verify enrollment and active work authorization filing history, so you spend time on roles where your OPT status won't stall the hiring process.
Time your extension request around your offer timeline
Submit your STEM OPT extension application at least 90 days before your initial OPT end date. If your offer comes in late, your DSO can still authorize the extension as long as USCIS receives the I-765 before your current EAD expires.

Find Transmission Engineer JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does a Transmission Engineer role qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
Yes, if your degree is in electrical engineering, systems engineering, computer engineering, or another STEM-designated field and the role directly applies that technical knowledge. USCIS evaluates the connection between your degree's CIP code and your job duties, not just the job title. Confirm your CIP code with your DSO and document the degree-to-role connection in your I-983 training plan before submitting.
Does my Transmission Engineer employer need to be enrolled in E-Verify?
Yes. E-Verify enrollment is a federal requirement for all STEM OPT employers, regardless of company size or sector. Utilities, grid operators, and engineering consultancies that hire transmission engineers aren't automatically enrolled, you must confirm active E-Verify participation before your start date. Ask your recruiter or HR contact directly, and verify enrollment through the E-Verify employer search tool to avoid losing your authorization window.
What goes into an I-983 training plan for a Transmission Engineer?
Your I-983 must describe specific learning objectives tied to your STEM degree and your day-to-day engineering work. For a Transmission Engineer, that means mapping tasks like protective relay coordination, power flow modeling, or transmission planning studies to the electrical or systems engineering competencies from your coursework. Generic descriptions like 'gaining industry experience' aren't sufficient. Both you and your supervising engineer must sign the plan, and your DSO submits it with your STEM OPT application.
How does cap-gap protection apply if my employer files an H-1B petition while I'm on STEM OPT?
If your employer files a timely H-1B petition before your STEM OPT EAD expires and you're selected in the lottery, cap-gap automatically extends your OPT work authorization through September 30 of that fiscal year. You can keep working as a Transmission Engineer during this period without a new EAD. USCIS confirms cap-gap eligibility on your I-20, which your DSO updates once the H-1B petition is filed.
Where can I find Transmission Engineer jobs with STEM OPT-compatible employers?
Migrate Mate filters Transmission Engineer openings by employers with verified E-Verify enrollment and work authorization filing history, so you can identify roles where your STEM OPT status is already understood. The O*NET occupation profile for Transmission Engineers also helps you match your degree to qualifying job duties, which strengthens both your job search targeting and your I-983 documentation.
