Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding STEM OPT Authorization as a Network Engineering Manager
Verify your CIP code before applying
Check that your degree's CIP code appears on the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List. Network Engineering Manager roles typically align with CIP codes under electrical engineering, computer engineering, or computer science. Your DSO confirms the match when endorsing your I-20.
Confirm E-Verify enrollment before accepting offers
Ask hiring managers directly whether the company is enrolled in E-Verify before you sign anything. You can cross-check by searching the employer's name in the E-Verify employer search database. Non-enrolled employers cannot legally hire STEM OPT workers.
Build your I-983 training plan around real deliverables
Network Engineering Manager roles must show a direct connection between your STEM degree and your day-to-day responsibilities. List specific projects like WAN redesigns, BGP policy implementations, or team-level network architecture reviews rather than vague management duties.
Target employers with established immigration infrastructure
Companies that regularly file LCAs with DOL for network engineering roles already understand the STEM OPT process. Use OFLC Wage Search to identify employers who have filed for Network and Computer Systems Manager positions in your target metro area.
Start your extension paperwork 90 days early
USCIS requires your STEM OPT extension application to be filed before your initial OPT EAD expires. File Form I-765 with your updated I-20 at least 90 days before expiration so your 180-day cap-gap authorization doesn't become your only buffer.
Use Migrate Mate to find verified STEM OPT employers
Search for Network Engineering Manager roles on Migrate Mate, which filters listings to employers with confirmed E-Verify enrollment and active immigration filing history. This saves you from applying to companies that can't legally support your STEM OPT authorization.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Network Engineering Manager role qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
Yes, if your degree is in an eligible STEM field such as computer science, electrical engineering, or computer engineering, and your job duties directly apply that training. The role must involve substantive technical work, not purely administrative management. Your DSO evaluates the connection between your degree CIP code and your job responsibilities when endorsing your STEM OPT I-20.
What goes into the I-983 training plan for a Network Engineering Manager position?
Your I-983 must describe specific technical goals tied to your STEM degree, such as designing network redundancy systems, implementing routing protocols, or leading infrastructure security upgrades. Generic management responsibilities won't satisfy USCIS. Both you and your employer sign the form, and your DSO reviews it. You must update it if your role or employer changes during the 24-month extension period.
How do I confirm my employer is enrolled in E-Verify?
E-Verify enrollment is mandatory for any employer hiring STEM OPT workers. You can search the E-Verify employer database by company name to confirm enrollment before accepting an offer. If your employer isn't enrolled, they cannot legally employ you on STEM OPT, and onboarding without enrollment puts your status at risk. Raise this question early in the offer stage, not after signing.
What happens to my work authorization if my H-1B is selected in the lottery while I'm on STEM OPT?
If your employer files an H-1B visa petition for you and it's selected, cap-gap protection extends your STEM OPT work authorization through September 30 of that fiscal year while USCIS adjudicates your petition. You don't need a separate EAD during this window. USCIS provides cap-gap coverage automatically when your employer files before your current OPT EAD expires.
Where can I find Network Engineering Manager jobs that support STEM OPT?
Migrate Mate lists Network Engineering Manager roles filtered by employers with E-Verify enrollment and documented immigration filing activity. This matters for STEM OPT students because not every company that posts a job is legally set up to hire you. Searching through Migrate Mate reduces the risk of spending weeks in a process with an employer who can't actually support your work authorization.
