Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding STEM OPT Authorization in Infrastructure And Operations
Verify your CIP code covers I&O roles
Check your degree's CIP code against USCIS's STEM Designated Degree Program List before applying. Computer and Information Systems, Computer Engineering, and Information Science codes commonly support Infrastructure and Operations job titles, but Network Administration degrees sometimes fall outside the list.
Confirm E-Verify enrollment before accepting offers
Ask hiring managers to confirm their E-Verify company ID number during the offer stage, not after. Employers can verify their own enrollment status through the E-Verify portal, and you can cross-check it there too before signing anything.
Target employers with active infrastructure teams
Use Migrate Mate to filter for employers with verified STEM OPT hiring history in Infrastructure and Operations. This narrows your search to companies already familiar with I-983 training plans, mentorship requirements, and the 60-day reporting windows USCIS enforces.
Build your I-983 training plan around real deliverables
Your I-983 must list specific technical goals tied to your STEM degree, not a generic job description. For I&O roles, frame learning objectives around infrastructure projects you'll own, such as cloud migration work or disaster recovery planning, with measurable outcomes your supervisor can evaluate.
Benchmark your salary against DOL prevailing wage data
Run your job title and work location through the OFLC Wage Search before negotiating. STEM OPT employers must pay you at least the same wage as similarly situated U.S. workers, and knowing the Level I and Level II wage ranges for your infrastructure role strengthens your position.
Map your role to an O*NET occupation code early
Look up your Infrastructure and Operations job title in O*NET to identify the Standard Occupational Classification code. Your employer will need this for the I-983, and mismatches between your role, your degree, and the SOC code are a common reason DSOs flag training plans for revision.

Find Infrastructure And Operations JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Do Infrastructure and Operations jobs qualify for STEM OPT?
They can, but eligibility depends on your specific degree, not the job title alone. Roles in systems administration, cloud operations, network engineering, and IT infrastructure management typically qualify when your degree carries an approved STEM CIP code. Your DSO confirms eligibility based on the degree on record with your school, so verify this before your I-983 training plan is submitted.
What does an I&O employer need to do to support my STEM OPT?
Your employer must be enrolled in E-Verify, sign the I-983 training plan alongside your DSO, and provide a formal mentorship arrangement with a supervisor who holds a relevant degree or equivalent experience. They also need to report material changes to your role or work location within five business days and complete a six-month evaluation of your progress against the training objectives.
How does cap-gap affect me if I'm on STEM OPT in an I&O role?
If your employer files an H-1B petition before your STEM OPT expires and you're selected in the lottery, cap-gap automatically extends your work authorization through September 30 of that year. You can continue working in your Infrastructure and Operations role during this period without interruption, as long as the petition was filed on time and your status hasn't otherwise lapsed.
How do I find Infrastructure and Operations employers who are enrolled in E-Verify?
Migrate Mate lets you browse Infrastructure and Operations roles filtered for employers with STEM OPT hiring experience, which typically means E-Verify enrollment is already in place. You can also confirm enrollment directly through E-Verify's employer search before you apply, which saves you from reaching the offer stage with a company that isn't set up to hire you.
Can my STEM OPT training plan cover a fully remote I&O role?
Yes, remote work is permitted under STEM OPT, but the I-983 must still list a specific primary work location, even if that's your home address. Your employer's E-Verify enrollment must cover the state where you're physically working. If you relocate, your employer must report the change to your DSO promptly, and your DSO may need to update your SEVIS record.
