Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding STEM OPT Authorization as a Rpa Developer
Verify your CIP code before applying
RPA Developer roles typically map to CIP codes 11.0101 or 14.0901. Confirm your degree's CIP code with your DSO before submitting I-983 training plans, since a mismatch can invalidate your STEM OPT extension even after an employer approves your start date.
Filter employers by E-Verify enrollment status
STEM OPT requires your employer to be enrolled in E-Verify before your training plan is filed. Use Migrate Mate to search RPA Developer roles filtered for E-Verify-enrolled employers so you're not investing time in companies that legally cannot hire you on STEM OPT.
Target RPA teams inside large enterprise employers
RPA initiatives are most active at companies running large back-office automation programs, typically in finance, healthcare, and logistics. These employers already have immigration compliance infrastructure, making E-Verify enrollment and I-983 plan approvals significantly smoother for STEM OPT candidates.
Align your I-983 learning objectives to RPA tooling
Your training plan must show a direct connection between your STEM degree and your RPA role. List specific technical goals tied to platforms like UiPath or Automation Anywhere alongside the engineering or computer science coursework your employer is building on.
Start your extension application 90 days early
USCIS allows you to file the STEM OPT extension up to 90 days before your initial OPT expires. Filing early protects your work authorization continuity if USCIS processing runs long, especially critical when you're mid-project on an RPA implementation with a delivery deadline.
Confirm cap-gap coverage if your H-1B is selected
If you're in STEM OPT and get selected in the H-1B lottery, cap-gap rules automatically extend your work authorization through September 30 of that year. Notify your employer's HR team immediately so they don't pause your employment while waiting for the H-1B start date.

Find Rpa Developer JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does an RPA Developer role qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
Yes, if your degree was awarded in a qualifying STEM field. RPA Developer positions typically fall under computer science, software engineering, or information systems CIP codes, all of which appear on the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List. Confirm your specific CIP code with your DSO before your employer submits the I-983 training plan to your school.
How do I know if an RPA Developer employer is enrolled in E-Verify?
E-Verify enrollment is a federal requirement for any employer hiring a STEM OPT student. You can check enrollment status directly through the E-Verify employer search tool on the E-Verify website, or search for RPA Developer roles on Migrate Mate, which surfaces only E-Verify-enrolled employers so you don't waste time applying to companies that can't legally hire you on STEM OPT.
What should my I-983 training plan include for an RPA Developer role?
Your I-983 must show a clear connection between your STEM degree and your RPA responsibilities. List concrete learning goals tied to your degree field, such as applying systems engineering principles to process automation, implementing software design patterns in robotic workflows, or analyzing business process data. Your employer and DSO both sign off, and your employer must provide a 12-month evaluation halfway through the extension period.
How long can I work as an RPA Developer on STEM OPT?
Your initial OPT period gives you 12 months of work authorization. The STEM OPT extension adds 24 months on top of that, for a total of 36 months. Both periods require your employer to be enrolled in E-Verify. If your H-1B petition is selected in the lottery during your STEM OPT period, cap-gap rules extend your authorization automatically through September 30 of that fiscal year.
What STEM degrees make an RPA Developer role eligible for the extension?
Degrees in computer science, software engineering, electrical engineering, information systems, mathematics, and related STEM fields listed on the DHS designated program list qualify. O*NET classifies RPA Developer work under software developers and related occupations, which maps directly to these degree fields. If your degree is in a borderline discipline like business information systems, verify the exact CIP code with your DSO before accepting an offer.
