Verify your CIP code before applying
Check that your degree's CIP code appears on the STEM Designated Degree Program List before targeting Salesforce Consultant roles. Business information systems and management information systems degrees qualify; a general business degree typically doesn't, even with a tech focus.
Confirm E-Verify enrollment before accepting offers
Ask the recruiter for the company's E-Verify Company ID or check the E-Verify employer search tool. A company that isn't enrolled cannot legally employ you on STEM OPT, so verify enrollment before you sign anything, not after.
Target companies with active Salesforce practice teams
Consulting firms, system integrators, and Salesforce implementation partners file LCAs regularly for technical roles. Search OFLC Wage Search to see which employers have certified LCAs in your target metro under SOC code 15-1299 or 15-1251.
Use Migrate Mate to filter roles by E-Verify status
Search Salesforce Consultant positions on Migrate Mate, which surfaces employers based on DOL Labor Condition Application filing history and E-Verify participation so you don't waste applications on companies that can't hire you on STEM OPT.
Draft your I-983 training plan before your offer deadline
Your employer must co-sign the I-983 before your DSO submits the STEM OPT extension request. Prepare a draft that maps Salesforce implementation, configuration, and client delivery work to your STEM degree's learning objectives so the employer can review and sign quickly.
Time your extension request around the 90-day filing window
Your DSO can recommend the STEM OPT extension up to 90 days before your initial OPT EAD expires. Submit your application to USCIS at least 90 days early so you have a receipt notice and can continue working without a gap if your new EAD is delayed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Salesforce Consultant role qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
Yes, if your employer classifies the role under a qualifying SOC code such as 15-1251 (Computer Programmer) or 15-1299 (Computer Occupations, All Other) and your degree carries an eligible CIP code. Salesforce configuration, integration, and implementation work generally maps to these codes. Confirm the SOC classification with your employer before your DSO submits the extension request to USCIS.
What STEM degrees make you eligible for a Salesforce Consultant STEM OPT extension?
Degrees in computer science, management information systems, computer information systems, and software engineering typically qualify under the STEM Designated Degree Program List. A general business or management degree usually doesn't qualify even if your coursework included technology. Check your degree's CIP code against the official STEM list maintained by the Department of Homeland Security before targeting roles.
How do you verify that a Salesforce consulting employer is enrolled in E-Verify?
Ask the recruiter directly for the company's E-Verify Company ID. You can also search the E-Verify employer search tool by company name or location. Enrollment is mandatory for every employer hiring on STEM OPT. If a company can't provide its E-Verify ID or doesn't appear in the search, it cannot sponsor your extension, regardless of how the offer is structured.
What should the I-983 training plan include for a Salesforce Consultant role?
The I-983 must connect your specific job duties to the learning objectives of your STEM degree. For a Salesforce Consultant, that means documenting how Salesforce CRM configuration, data modeling, Apex development, or integration architecture reinforces skills from your degree program. Your employer's supervisor signs the plan, and your DSO reviews it before submitting to USCIS. Both parties must complete a formal review every six months.
Where can you find Salesforce Consultant jobs that accept STEM OPT students?
Migrate Mate filters Salesforce Consultant listings by employers with confirmed DOL LCA filing history and E-Verify participation, which removes companies that can't legally hire you on STEM OPT. You can search by location and role type to focus on consulting firms and system integrators that regularly sponsor work authorization for technical positions.
