Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding STEM OPT Authorization as a Salesforce Developer
Confirm your CIP code before applying
Check that your degree's Classification of Instructional Programs code maps to an approved STEM field on the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List. Computer science, information systems, and software engineering all qualify, but a mismatch delays or voids your extension.
Verify E-Verify enrollment before accepting offers
Before signing anything, confirm the employer is actively enrolled in E-Verify, not just registered. Ask your recruiter directly or search the E-Verify employer search tool. Working for a non-enrolled employer puts your STEM OPT authorization at immediate risk.
File your I-983 training plan before day one
Your employer must sign a completed I-983 before you start work, not after. For Salesforce Developer roles, the plan should map Apex, Lightning, and integration work to your STEM degree's learning objectives, which DSOs review for approval.
Target companies with active Salesforce practices
Use Migrate Mate to filter for employers with verified STEM OPT hiring history in software development roles. Companies with dedicated Salesforce teams already have E-Verify enrollment and established onboarding workflows for OPT students, cutting delays at the offer stage.
Benchmark your offer against prevailing wage data
Run the OFLC Wage Search using SOC code 15-1252 before evaluating any offer. Employers sponsoring your eventual H-1B visa must meet prevailing wage requirements, and starting at or above that threshold now avoids renegotiation later in the process.
Start your extension application 90 days early
USCIS requires your STEM OPT extension to be filed at least 90 days before your initial OPT expires. For Salesforce roles with long hiring cycles, that means beginning employer conversations and DSO paperwork well before your cap date approaches.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Salesforce Developer role qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
Yes, Salesforce Developer positions typically qualify under SOC code 15-1252 for software developers and software quality assurance analysts. Your degree must appear on the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List, and relevant fields include computer science, information systems, and software engineering. Verify your CIP code with your DSO before filing to confirm eligibility.
What E-Verify requirement applies to my Salesforce Developer employer?
Every employer who hires you on a STEM OPT extension must be enrolled in E-Verify for the specific site where you'll work. If you're placed at a client site through a staffing agency, both the agency and the end client may need to meet this requirement. Confirm enrollment status before accepting an offer, not after signing.
What goes into the I-983 training plan for a Salesforce Developer position?
The I-983 must connect your day-to-day Salesforce work to the learning objectives of your STEM degree. For a developer role, that typically means documenting how tasks such as building Apex classes, designing Lightning components, or integrating third-party APIs apply and extend skills from your degree program. Your employer's supervisor and your DSO both sign off before work begins.
How does cap-gap affect me if my employer files an H-1B petition while I'm on STEM OPT?
If your STEM OPT is set to expire before October 1 and your employer files a timely H-1B petition on your behalf, cap-gap automatically extends your work authorization through September 30 of that year. You can continue working as a Salesforce Developer during this period without any gap, as long as the petition was filed before your STEM OPT end date.
Where can I find Salesforce Developer jobs where employers are already set up for STEM OPT hiring?
Migrate Mate surfaces Salesforce Developer roles from employers with verified E-Verify enrollment and STEM OPT hiring history, so you're not filtering manually through unqualified postings. You can search by role type and work authorization status to focus your applications on companies already structured to hire F-1 students on OPT.
