Verify your CIP code before applying
Check your degree's Classification of Instructional Programs code against the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List. Surveying programs often fall under Civil Engineering Technology or Geomatics, but the exact CIP code on your transcript determines eligibility.
Target firms with active government survey contracts
Federal, state, and municipal survey contracts require contractors to use E-Verify by law, so these employers are already enrolled. Engineering and geospatial firms bidding on DOT, Army Corps, or BLM projects are a reliable pool for STEM OPT-eligible employers.
Use Migrate Mate to filter for STEM OPT employers
Search Surveyor roles on Migrate Mate to see which employers have E-Verify enrollment and prior work authorization sponsorship activity, so you're not cold-applying to firms that have never navigated the I-983 training plan process.
Align your I-983 training plan to licensure milestones
Your I-983 must list specific learning objectives tied to your STEM degree. For surveyors, frame objectives around geospatial data collection, coordinate geometry, or boundary law skills that also count toward your state's Professional Land Surveyor licensure hours.
Research prevailing wage levels before negotiating
Pull the wage level for your SOC code and work location using OFLC Wage Search before your offer negotiation. If your employer later files an LCA for H-1B sponsorship, your salary must meet the certified prevailing wage, so starting there protects your transition.

Find Surveyor JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does a surveying or geomatics degree qualify for STEM OPT?
It depends on the CIP code assigned to your specific degree program, not just the degree title. Programs classified under Civil Engineering Technology, Surveying Technology, or Geomatics and Geospatial Information Science and Technology are typically on the DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List. Confirm the CIP code on your official transcript and cross-reference it against the current DHS list before your DSO applies for the extension.
What does the I-983 training plan need to include for a surveyor role?
Your I-983 must describe how the practical training directly relates to your STEM degree. For surveyor positions, this means specifying learning objectives tied to geospatial data analysis, boundary determination, geodetic surveying methods, or GIS applications, depending on your degree field. Both you and a supervisor with signatory authority must sign it, and you're required to submit updated evaluations every six months and at the end of the training period.
Does my surveying employer need to be enrolled in E-Verify?
Yes. E-Verify enrollment is a hard requirement for any employer who wants to hire you on STEM OPT. Before accepting an offer, ask HR to confirm active E-Verify enrollment and provide the company's E-Verify Company ID if possible. Working for an employer who is not enrolled while on STEM OPT puts your immigration status at risk, regardless of whether the job itself qualifies.
How does cap-gap protect me if my H-1B is filed before my STEM OPT expires?
If your employer files an H-1B petition before your STEM OPT EAD expires and USCIS selects it in the lottery, cap-gap automatically extends your work authorization through September 30 of that fiscal year. You can continue working as a surveyor under the same employer without interruption. USCIS updates I-20 extensions for cap-gap through your DSO, so keep your DSO informed of your petition status as soon as filing is confirmed.
Where can I find surveyor jobs with employers already familiar with STEM OPT?
Migrate Mate lists surveyor and geospatial roles from employers with documented work authorization sponsorship history, so you can focus on firms that have navigated the I-983 and E-Verify process before. This is especially useful in a field like surveying, where many small and mid-size firms are unfamiliar with STEM OPT requirements and may decline candidates even when the role qualifies.
