Structural Engineer Jobs in Indiana: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a structural engineer in Indiana?
Becoming a licensed structural engineer in Indiana requires a bachelor's degree in civil or structural engineering from an ABET-accredited program, passing the Fundamentals of Engineering exam, gaining qualifying experience, and then passing the Principles and Practice of Engineering exam. Licensure is issued through the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency. Most Indiana firms expect candidates to be actively pursuing licensure or to hold a valid Indiana PE license before reaching senior project roles.
Which companies hire structural engineers in Indiana?
Indiana structural engineer roles are posted by Salas O'Brien, The High Companies, and WGI and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Indiana's concentration of infrastructure consulting firms, state DOT contractors, and large industrial clients creates recurring demand at both small regional practices and nationally recognized engineering companies with Indiana offices.
Which Indiana cities have the most structural engineer jobs?
Indianapolis, Butler, and Indiana account for the largest share of structural engineer openings in Indiana. Indianapolis draws the broadest range of employers given its size, state agency presence, and commercial construction activity, while Fort Wayne and other metros reflect demand tied to regional infrastructure projects and manufacturing facility work that keeps engineering offices active across the state.
Are there remote structural engineer jobs in Indiana?
Yes, but they're rare. Structural engineering is fundamentally site-dependent, and most roles require on-site assessments, client coordination, and construction observation that cannot be done remotely. About 0% of structural engineer openings tied to Indiana are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, and those positions tend to involve design and analysis phases rather than field or project management responsibilities.
How can I get hired as a structural engineer in Indiana with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for staff or junior engineer roles at Indiana-based civil and structural consulting firms, which regularly hire new graduates to support project teams on INDOT contracts and commercial projects. Firms like American Structurepoint and Woolpert offer structured development programs for early-career engineers. Completing the Fundamentals of Engineering exam before or shortly after graduation signals commitment and gives candidates a measurable edge in competitive applicant pools.
