Structural Engineer Jobs in Houston: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a structural engineer job in Houston?
The strongest path into Houston's structural engineering market is through the energy and petrochemical sector, which drives more hiring here than in most U.S. cities. Firms supporting refineries, offshore platforms, and industrial facilities along the Ship Channel and in the Energy Corridor hire consistently. Candidates with experience in steel design, industrial structures, or ASCE 7 load analysis stand out. Connections through local ASCE Houston Section events also open doors.
Which companies hire structural engineers in Houston?
Houston structural engineer roles are posted by Burns & McDonnell, Fluor, and KBR and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Houston's market includes large EPC firms, specialty industrial engineering consultancies, and major commercial real estate developers, reflecting the city's mix of energy infrastructure and urban construction activity.
Are there remote structural engineer jobs in Houston?
Yes, though structural engineering is largely site-dependent, with analysis, modeling, and document review being the most remote-compatible tasks. About 40% of structural engineer openings tied to Houston are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, skewing toward roles at large engineering firms where BIM coordination and design work can be done off-site. Field inspection and construction administration roles remain fully in person.
How can I get a structural engineer job in Houston with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path in Houston is through an EI or EIT role at a mid-size engineering consultancy supporting commercial or industrial projects. Firms in the Greenway Plaza and Westchase corridors regularly hire new graduates for drafting-heavy roles that build toward full design responsibilities. A degree from the University of Houston or Rice University carries local name recognition. Proficiency in RISA, SAP2000, or Revit Structure strengthens any entry-level application here.
Which industries hire the most structural engineers in Houston?
The sectors hiring the most structural engineers in Houston are Consulting & Professional Services, Construction & Real Estate, and Energy, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Houston's concentration of refinery infrastructure, offshore energy assets, and large-scale commercial development makes it one of the highest-demand U.S. markets for engineers with industrial and heavy-civil specializations.
