Structural Engineer Jobs in Seattle: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a structural engineer job in Seattle?
Structural engineer hiring in Seattle concentrates in three areas: major design-build firms working on high-rise and mixed-use projects in South Lake Union, public agencies and transit contractors tied to Sound Transit expansion, and civil engineering consultancies handling seismic retrofit and waterfront infrastructure. Candidates who stand out locally have hands-on experience with wood-frame or mass timber construction, which is prevalent across the Pacific Northwest market, and familiarity with Seattle's strict seismic design requirements.
Which companies hire structural engineers in Seattle?
Employers hiring structural engineers in Seattle right now include Blue Origin, HDR, and AECOM, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Seattle's mix of large multidisciplinary engineering firms, regional transit authorities, and boutique structural consultancies means openings range from project-engineer roles on commercial towers to staff positions supporting public infrastructure contracts.
Are there remote structural engineer jobs in Seattle?
Yes, though opportunities are limited because structural engineering is largely site-dependent and inspection-heavy. About 30% of structural engineer openings tied to Seattle are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, concentrated among employers with strong BIM and computational design workflows. The analytical and documentation phases of a project, including load calculations, drawing review, and report writing, are the portions most likely to be performed remotely in Seattle-based roles.
How can I get a structural engineer job in Seattle with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path in Seattle is through a junior or EIT-designated role at a mid-size structural consultancy, many of which are clustered downtown and in the Eastside corridor around Bellevue and Kirkland. Firms working on Sound Transit's ongoing capital program and Seattle's active seismic retrofit pipeline regularly hire recent graduates for field support and drafting roles. Building proficiency in Revit and ETABS and pursuing your Engineer-in-Training credential before applying gives candidates a clear edge over the local competition.
Which industries hire the most structural engineers in Seattle?
The sectors hiring the most structural engineers in Seattle are Consulting & Professional Services, Construction & Real Estate, and Human Resources, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Seattle's sustained commercial construction activity, a large public infrastructure investment pipeline anchored by Sound Transit, and the region's seismic risk all keep demand across those sectors consistently above national averages.
