Part-Time Elementary Student Success Coach

Job Summary
The Success Coach is a part-time, school-based advocate dedicated to supporting low-to-moderate income (LMI) English Language Learner (ELL) students in Birmingham City Schools (BCS). The Coach serves as an advocate, mentor, instructor, and culturally responsive resource for students and their families. The position is designed to increase student and parent engagement, support academic growth, strengthen early literacy skills, promote positive social-emotional development, and foster school readiness and long-term educational success. Coaches provide daily, personalized support, as well as small-group and classroom-based programming aligned with HICA’s and BCS’s education initiatives. While primarily based at designated schools, Coaches may rotate across other BCS schools as needed, in consultation with their HICA supervisor and school staff.

Status: Part-time, (25-30 hours)

Key Responsibilities
Student Support & Coaching
· Conduct one-on-one and small-group bilingual coaching sessions focused on academic engagement, literacy development, school attendance, positive behavior, and social-emotional growth.
· Support newcomer students and families in navigating U.S. school systems, school expectations, routines, and available support services.
· Provide targeted support to students identified as needing additional academic, behavioral, attendance, or social-emotional interventions.
· Promote a positive school experience by helping students build confidence, self-regulation skills, perseverance, and a growth mindset.
Family Engagement
· Host bilingual orientation sessions to help parents understand school expectations, attendance requirements, grading platforms, literacy development, and available school resources.
· Facilitate workshops and family engagement events focused on literacy, school readiness, child development, and parent involvement.
· Support the implementation of family literacy initiatives and parent education programs.
· Connect families to community resources and services that support student success and family well-being.
Program Facilitation & Data Management
· Lead HICA elementary school enrichment programming in assigned schools.
· Facilitate literacy support programming, small-group interventions, and academic enrichment activities aligned with student needs.
· Support activities that promote reading proficiency, language development, school engagement, and social-emotional learning.
· Record and analyze student interactions, workshops, one-on-one sessions, family support services, and literacy interventions using data-tracking tools.
· Review success metrics and prepare impact summaries to support program evaluation, improvement, and reporting.
School Collaboration
· Collaborate with school staff to identify and address barriers to student success.
· Maintain regular communication with school principals, assistant principals, counselors, teachers, reading specialists, and instructional coaches.
· Participate in student support meetings and collaborate with Birmingham City Schools equity initiatives to promote culturally responsive, inclusive, and developmentally appropriate practices.
· Ensure Success Coach activities are aligned with school goals, policies, and support systems.
General Responsibilities
· Travel locally for training, meetings, and organizational events as assigned.
· Expected in person presence at HICA for staff required meetings.
Qualifications
· Bachelor’s degree in education, social work, psychology, or related field; equivalent experience considered.
· 2+ years of experience in youth development, academic advising, coaching, or school-based programming.
· Fluent in English and Spanish, with strong verbal and written communication skills in both languages.
· Experience working with immigrant and/or low-income communities in a culturally responsive manner.
· Knowledge of Birmingham City Schools or similar urban education environments preferred.
· Strong organizational skills, emotional intelligence, and ability to work independently within a school system.
· Familiarity with student data tools, success tracking systems, and outcome measurement.
· Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends for family events or workshops.
· Commitment to HICA’s mission of community development, education equity, and immigrant empowerment.
Compensation:
Hourly rate: From $21 to $22 per hour based on experience and qualifications.
