Tips for Your Substation Electrician Job Search
List your certifications by voltage class
Hiring managers scan for specific voltage experience fast. On your resume, group certifications and hands-on work by class, such as distribution, transmission, and high-voltage, so recruiters can match your background to their system requirements without guessing.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists substation electrician openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Target openings by protection scheme type
Job postings often call out relay types like SEL, GE, or ABB. When filtering openings, watch for those keywords and tailor your application to show direct hands-on time with the specific protection and control equipment the employer already runs.
Highlight OSHA 70E and switching experience separately
Safety credentials and live-switching authorization are screening filters at most utilities, not just nice-to-haves. Put them in a dedicated certifications section near the top of your resume so they clear automated screening before a human reads the rest.
Prepare for practical skills assessments
Many utilities include a hands-on or written technical assessment before the offer stage. Review single-line diagrams, lockout-tagout procedures, and protection relay logic ahead of time, because these are the areas most commonly tested in the substation electrician hiring process.
Follow up after technical interviews with specifics
Generic thank-you notes get ignored in trades hiring. Reference the specific switchgear, relay platform, or voltage level you discussed in the interview to remind the hiring manager exactly what you bring and to reinforce that your experience matches the role they are filling.
Substation Electrician Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most substation electricians?
The companies hiring the most substation electricians right now include HDR, Kiewit, and WSP, with the largest share of openings in Texas, Tennessee, and California, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Utility contractors and transmission system operators tend to post the highest volume of roles on an ongoing basis.
How many substation electrician jobs are remote?
About 23% of substation electrician openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the hands-on nature of most substation work. The sub-areas most likely to offer any remote component are protection and control engineering roles, relay settings work, and project coordination positions that involve documentation and design review rather than direct field work.
How do you become a substation electrician?
You typically start by completing a registered electrical apprenticeship through a union or utility program, which combines classroom instruction with supervised field hours. After completing the apprenticeship and earning a journeyman license, you gain experience in high-voltage environments and pursue additional certifications such as OSHA 70E. Many substation electricians also complete manufacturer training on specific relay or switchgear platforms to qualify for more advanced roles.
Can you get hired as a substation electrician with little experience?
Yes, entry-level substation electrician roles exist, but they almost always require a completed electrical apprenticeship or at minimum a journeyman license before employers will consider you for unsupervised substation work. If you are early in your career, apply to apprentice or trainee designations at utilities and electrical contractors, where you will gain direct substation exposure under a journeyman before moving into a fully independent role.
What does the substation electrician interview process look like?
The process typically starts with a phone screen focused on your license status, voltage experience, and availability for shift or on-call work. A technical interview or written assessment follows, covering single-line diagram interpretation, protection relay basics, and switching and lockout-tagout procedures. Some employers add a practical component where you walk through a scenario at a real or simulated substation before a final offer is extended.
Where can I find and apply to substation electrician jobs?
You can find and apply to substation electrician jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States. Search the listings to find roles that match your license level, voltage experience, and preferred location, then apply directly to each opening that fits.
