- Role: Part-time OB Surgical Technologist
- Shift/FTE: .6 FTE Night shift
- Schedule: Will work four 12 hour night shifts every two weeks (7:00pm - 7:30am)
- Unit: 10-bed Labor & Delivery unit with 2 OR suites
- Hospital: St. Joseph Medical Center, 253-bed acute care hospital with level II trauma center
Location: On the shores of Bellingham Bay with Mount Baker at its backdrop, Bellingham, WA is just 45 minutes South of Vancouver BC and 90 miles North of Seattle. Position Details: This position is responsible for assisting the Surgical team during operative procedures by performing a variety of technical duties to primarily assist in responsibility for the preparation and maintenance of the surgical sterile field for the obstetrical operative patient and/or her infant.
Essential Functions
- Arrange and inventories sterile set-up for operation and passes items as needed to the surgical team.
- Understand and apply the principles of asepsis. Establish and maintain sterile field and assure team maintains sterile environment.
- Assist in preparation and moving of patients.
- Cleans, disinfects, and sterilizes instrumentation. Assists with clean-up and room turnover.
- Assists in vaginal births
- Access computer information as needed, such as preference lists and digital images.
- Maintain unit supplies by requisitioning and receiving supplies then stocking patient rooms and supply areas to meet patient care needs. Inventory control.
- Participates in all safety initiatives. Adheres to programs such as SCIP and SCOAP quality initiatives.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Requires: Completion of an accredited Surgical Technology Program or recognized course of training as a Surgical Technologist
- Requires: Minimum of 1 year experience as a Surgical Technologist, prefer experience with obstetrical and gynecologic surgeries
- Required: Demonstrated knowledge of and ability to apply age specific principles of growth and development and life stages to meet each patient’s needs
- Required: Washington State Surgical Technologist Registration
- Required: Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support Certification
- Preferred: Certified Surgical Technologist

Lifting
- Patient handling no greater than 35 lbs. without the use of assistive equipment and/or devices (NIOSH).
- Fine motor skills to be able to grasp and control medical equipment and perform precise procedures.

- Frequent reaching/ bending/ squatting/ kneeling/ grasping.
- Lift/Carry: Frequently up to 15 lbs. Occasionally up to 20 lbs.
- Push/Pull: Frequently up to 20 lbs. force. Occasional up to 30 lbs. force.
Environmental Conditions
- Exposure to biohazard, body fluids and airborne particles.
- Exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals.
- Time spent on site in medical/hospital setting.
Mental/Visual
- Vision and hearing required within normal limits (glasses, contacts, hearing aids permitted).
- Ability to communicate and exchange accurate information.
