Tax Attorney Jobs in Kentucky: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a tax attorney in Kentucky?
To become a tax attorney in Kentucky, you must earn a Juris Doctor from an ABA-accredited law school, pass the Kentucky Bar Examination, and be admitted to the Kentucky Bar Association through the Kentucky Office of Bar Admissions. Many Kentucky employers prefer candidates who have also completed an LLM in Taxation, which strengthens credentials for corporate, estate, and state and local tax roles in the state's major markets.
How much do tax attorneys make in Kentucky?
Tax attorneys in Kentucky earn a median of about $101,550 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $63,010 for the lowest 10% to over $187,180 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire tax attorneys in Kentucky?
Companies currently hiring tax attorneys in Kentucky include Infineon Technologies, H&R Block, and KPMG, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Kentucky's concentration of healthcare corporations, energy utilities, and state government agencies means both in-house and outside counsel opportunities arise regularly across Louisville and Frankfort.
Which Kentucky cities have the most tax attorney jobs?
The cities with the most tax attorney openings in Kentucky are Louisville, Lexington, and Paducah. Louisville dominates because of its dense cluster of Fortune 500 and regional corporate headquarters in healthcare and logistics, while Frankfort draws openings tied to Kentucky state government agencies and regulatory bodies that require specialized state and local tax expertise.
Are there remote tax attorney jobs in Kentucky?
Yes, and more than many legal specialties, since tax work centers on research, drafting, and advisory services that translate well to remote settings. About 41% of tax attorney openings tied to Kentucky are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting broader trends in corporate legal departments. Tax controversy representation and client-facing planning work are the areas most likely to require at least some in-office presence.
How can I get hired as a tax attorney in Kentucky with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a summer associate or law clerk position at a Louisville or Lexington firm with a dedicated tax practice, converting to an associate role after bar admission. Large Kentucky employers including regional law firms and Humana's in-house legal department recruit new associates directly from Kentucky law schools. Candidates who have completed an LLM in Taxation, passed the Kentucky bar on the first attempt, and gained any clinic or externship exposure to tax controversy or estate planning have a clear advantage for these entry openings.
