Tax Attorney Jobs in Mississippi: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a tax attorney in Mississippi?
Becoming a tax attorney in Mississippi requires earning a Juris Doctor from an ABA-accredited law school and passing the Mississippi Bar Examination, which is administered by the Mississippi Board of Bar Admissions. After admission, attorneys practicing tax law often pursue an LL.M. in Taxation to deepen their credentials. Mississippi also recognizes admission by reciprocity for attorneys licensed in other states who meet the board's experience requirements.
How much do tax attorneys make in Mississippi?
Tax attorneys in Mississippi earn a median of about $91,690 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $47,670 for the lowest 10% to over $176,750 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire tax attorneys in Mississippi?
Employers hiring tax attorneys in Mississippi right now include KPMG, BMSS, and TMH, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Mississippi's energy sector, regional banking institutions, and state government agencies are particularly consistent sources of tax attorney openings.
Which Mississippi cities have the most tax attorney jobs?
Jackson, Ridgeland, and Hattiesburg are the Mississippi cities with the most tax attorney openings. Jackson leads as the state capital and home to the largest concentration of law firms, government agencies, and corporate legal departments, while Ridgeland and Gulfport draw demand from financial services firms, healthcare systems, and Gulf Coast energy and hospitality businesses.
Are there remote tax attorney jobs in Mississippi?
Yes, and more than many legal specialties, since tax work is largely research, drafting, and advisory in nature. About 14% of tax attorney openings tied to Mississippi are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting how much of this work can be performed without a daily office presence. Federal tax controversy, compliance advisory, and estate planning roles are the most commonly offered in remote or hybrid arrangements.
How can I get hired as a tax attorney in Mississippi with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a judicial clerkship with a Mississippi state or federal court, which provides writing experience and professional credibility that tax employers value highly. From there, associate positions at Jackson-based law firms or entry-level roles with the Mississippi Department of Revenue or the Office of the State Attorney General offer structured exposure to tax law practice. Candidates with an LL.M. in Taxation or prior paralegal experience in tax or estate planning hold a clear edge over other new admittees.
Where can I find and apply to tax attorney jobs in Mississippi?
You can find and apply to tax attorney jobs in Mississippi on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers across the state. Search the roles available, find the ones that fit your background and preferred location, and apply directly to each position that matches your experience.
