Tax Attorney Jobs in Montana: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a tax attorney in Montana?
To become a tax attorney in Montana, you must earn a Juris Doctor from an ABA-accredited law school and pass the Montana bar examination, administered by the Montana Supreme Court's Commission on Character and Fitness. After admission, most practitioners build tax expertise through an LLM in Taxation or by joining a firm with a dedicated tax practice. Montana's market favors candidates with coursework or clerkship experience in energy, estate, or state and local tax law.
How much do tax attorneys make in Montana?
Tax attorneys in Montana earn a median of about $103,720 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $62,090 for the lowest 10% to over $179,620 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire tax attorneys in Montana?
Companies currently hiring tax attorneys in Montana include Intuit, Eide Bailly, and Jobot, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Montana's legal market also draws consistent demand from large regional law firms, the Montana Department of Revenue, and energy and agricultural companies headquartered in the Billings and Helena corridors.
Which Montana cities have the most tax attorney jobs?
Missoula, Billings, and Bozeman account for the largest share of tax attorney openings in Montana. Billings drives volume as the state's commercial and energy hub, Helena concentrates government and regulatory roles given its status as the state capital, and Missoula supports demand through its university community, regional law firms, and growing professional services sector.
Are there remote tax attorney jobs in Montana?
Yes, and more than many legal specialties, since tax work is largely research, drafting, and advisory in nature. About 9% of tax attorney openings tied to Montana are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting how much of the work can be done outside a fixed office. Transactional tax research, compliance review, and written advocacy are the functions most commonly performed remotely.
How can I get hired as a tax attorney in Montana with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is joining a regional law firm as a tax associate, where supervised client work builds the practical foundation that Montana employers expect. Firms like Crowley Fleck and Moulton Bellingham run associate programs that welcome newly admitted attorneys. Clerking for a Montana district or tax court judge, or starting in a compliance analyst role at the Montana Department of Revenue before transitioning to legal work, also opens doors. Passing the bar and completing relevant tax coursework during law school gives candidates a measurable edge.
Where can I find and apply to tax attorney jobs in Montana?
You can find and apply to tax attorney jobs in Montana on Migrate Mate, which lists current Montana openings across firms, corporations, and government agencies. Search the listings, identify the roles that match your background and practice interests, and apply directly to each one that fits.
