Tax Attorney Jobs in Oklahoma: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a tax attorney in Oklahoma?
To practice as a tax attorney in Oklahoma, you must earn a Juris Doctor from an ABA-accredited law school, pass the Oklahoma Bar Examination, and be admitted to the Oklahoma Bar Association. Many employers in Oklahoma also prefer or require an LLM in Taxation, particularly for roles involving complex corporate or energy sector matters. After admission, you can apply directly to law firms, energy companies, or government agencies hiring tax counsel.
How much do tax attorneys make in Oklahoma?
Tax attorneys in Oklahoma earn a median of about $103,060 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $57,950 for the lowest 10% to over $207,340 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire tax attorneys in Oklahoma?
Companies currently hiring tax attorneys in Oklahoma include Weaver, Eide Bailly, and KPMG, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Oklahoma's energy sector, including major exploration and midstream companies headquartered in Oklahoma City and Tulsa, generates particularly consistent demand for tax attorneys with oil and gas transactional experience.
Which Oklahoma cities have the most tax attorney jobs?
Oklahoma City, Tulsa, and Norman account for the largest share of tax attorney openings in Oklahoma. Oklahoma City leads because it serves as the headquarters base for the state's largest energy companies, financial institutions, and government agencies, while Tulsa's concentration of midstream energy firms, manufacturing companies, and established regional law firms sustains its own strong hiring market.
Are there remote tax attorney jobs in Oklahoma?
Yes, and more than many legal roles. About 41% of tax attorney openings tied to Oklahoma are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting how much of the work involves research, document review, and client correspondence rather than courtroom appearances. Tax controversy, compliance advisory, and estate planning positions are the sub-areas most frequently offered on a remote or hybrid basis.
How can I get hired as a tax attorney in Oklahoma with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a summer associate or law clerk position at one of the regional law firms in Oklahoma City or Tulsa that run structured associate programs for new graduates, such as those at firms serving the energy and financial services sectors. The Oklahoma Tax Commission and the IRS Oklahoma City Taxpayer Assistance Center also hire entry-level legal staff and clerks. Completing an LLM in Taxation, even after bar admission, gives candidates a measurable edge over peers applying for the same associate-level openings.
