Align your degree to the engineer category
TN status depends on your degree field matching the engineer classification, not just your job title. A degree in computer science, electrical engineering, or mechanical engineering works. A general business or IT degree may not without additional documentation.
Target companies with recent visa filing history
Employers with recent visa filings for engineering roles already understand visa sponsorship processes. Prioritize those experienced with work visa sponsorship over companies new to sponsoring international talent, since they'll be better equipped to prepare the required support letter and navigate the TN visa process more efficiently.
Request a detailed offer letter before filing
Your offer letter is your TN petition at the Canadian border. It must specify your job title as engineer, describe duties that align with the USMCA engineer category, confirm full-time employment, and state your start date. A vague or HR-generic letter will get you turned away.
Use Migrate Mate to find sponsoring employers fast
Searching broadly wastes time on employers unfamiliar with TN sponsorship. Migrate Mate surfaces Application Engineer roles at companies already set up to sponsor TN professionals, cutting the time between search and a qualified offer.
Clarify pre-sales scope with your employer upfront
Application Engineer duties often blend pre-sales consulting and technical deployment. CBP officers assess whether your actual duties fit the engineer category, so get written clarity from your employer that your role is predominantly technical, not primarily sales-driven, before you cross the border.
Prepare for same-day Canadian border processing
Canadian citizens can receive TN status at a port of entry the same day, but CBP can deny entry if documentation is incomplete. Bring your degree credential, the offer letter, and any professional licenses. Do not assume the officer will ask for missing documents before denying.

Find Application Engineer JobsApplication Engineer TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Application Engineer qualify as a TN visa occupation?
Yes, Application Engineers qualify under the USMCA's engineer category, provided your role involves substantive engineering work such as systems integration, technical implementation, or product configuration. The job title alone is not enough; CBP will assess whether your actual duties align with engineering practice. Roles that are primarily sales-focused with minor technical components can face scrutiny.
How does TN visa sponsorship for Application Engineers compare to H-1B?
TN visa sponsorship is significantly faster and more predictable for Application Engineers than H-1B. There is no lottery, no annual cap for Canadians, and Canadian citizens can receive TN status at the border on the day of travel. H-1B requires a lottery selection, months of preparation, and an October 1 start date. For a role that clearly fits the engineer category, TN is almost always the faster path.
Can a Mexican Application Engineer apply for TN status at the border like a Canadian?
No. Mexican citizens must apply for a TN visa at a U.S. consulate in Mexico rather than seeking admission directly at a port of entry. The process involves scheduling a consular interview and waiting for visa issuance. The engineer category is available, but the process takes longer than the same-day border crossing available to Canadians.
Where can I find Application Engineer jobs that already offer TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for TN visa job seekers and surfaces Application Engineer roles at employers prepared to sponsor TN professionals. Searching general job boards often surfaces roles where the employer has no TN experience and may decline to sponsor once you disclose your status, wasting time on both sides.
What documents does my employer need to provide for my TN application as an Application Engineer?
Your employer must provide a detailed offer letter on company letterhead that identifies your position as an engineer, describes your specific technical duties, confirms the employment is full-time, and states your start date and work location. If you are Canadian, you present this letter directly at a U.S. port of entry; if you are Mexican, your employer's support letter is submitted with your application at a U.S. consulate.
