Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as a Civil Engineer
Verify your degree matches the role
TN visa classification requires a degree in civil engineering or a closely related field. A general science or technology degree without engineering coursework often fails the specialty occupation match. Check that your credential aligns with the specific job title before applying.
Get your foreign credentials evaluated early
Canadian and Mexican engineering degrees typically satisfy TN requirements, but degrees from third countries completed abroad need a credential evaluation. Arrange a NACES-member evaluation before you start interviewing so delays don't stall your offer.
Target employers with active infrastructure projects
Civil Engineer roles tied to federal or state infrastructure contracts are among the most TN-defensible positions because the project scope documents specialty work clearly. Focus your search on firms holding government contracts in transportation, water systems, or structural projects.
Ask employers about their TN filing experience upfront
Some construction and engineering firms have sponsored TN workers regularly; others haven't. Ask during the offer stage whether the company has filed TN petitions before. Employers with no TN experience often stall at the support letter stage, delaying your start date.
Use Migrate Mate to find TN-ready civil engineering employers
Searching broadly wastes time on employers who won't sponsor. Migrate Mate filters civil engineering roles by employer experience with visa sponsorship, so you're targeting companies already set up to hire Canadian and Mexican professionals under USMCA.
Prepare a precise employer support letter before entry
Canadian professionals presenting at the port of entry need an employer support letter specifying your role, project scope, and how your duties constitute civil engineering work. CBP officers assess TN eligibility on the spot, so vague letters are a common reason for denial.
Civil Engineer TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Civil Engineer role qualify for a TN visa?
Yes. Civil Engineer is an explicitly listed occupation in the USMCA TN category. Your job offer must be for work that qualifies as civil engineering, and you must hold a bachelor's degree or higher in civil engineering or a closely related discipline. Roles blending engineering with general project management or sales may face additional scrutiny.
How does TN visa sponsorship compare to H-1B for Civil Engineers?
TN visa sponsorship is faster and more predictable for Civil Engineers than H-1B visa. There's no annual lottery, no cap for Canadian citizens, and Canadians can activate TN status at a port of entry the same day. H-1B requires employer sponsorship months in advance and selection in a randomized lottery. TN is also employer-transferable without a waiting period, as long as you have a new qualifying offer.
What documents does my employer need to provide for TN sponsorship?
Your employer must provide a support letter on company letterhead that describes the position, your specific engineering duties, the anticipated duration of employment, and your qualifications. For Canadian citizens processed at the border, this letter is the primary document CBP reviews. Mexican citizens need a formal visa application through a U.S. consulate, which includes additional documentation.
Where can I find Civil Engineer jobs with TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically to match Canadian and Mexican professionals with U.S. employers offering TN visa sponsorship. Rather than sifting through general job boards where most postings don't address visa status at all, Migrate Mate surfaces roles where employers are already set up to sponsor TN workers in civil engineering and related fields.
Can I switch Civil Engineer employers on a TN visa?
Yes. TN status is tied to a specific employer, so changing jobs requires a new TN authorization before or at the time you start work with the new company. Canadian citizens can often handle this at a port of entry with a new employer support letter. Mexican citizens need to apply for a new TN visa at a U.S. consulate. You don't need USCIS approval in advance to switch employers as a Canadian.
