Verify your degree supports the petition
TN visa status for Construction Project Manager roles hinges on a qualifying degree in engineering, architecture, or a directly related field. A general business or management degree alone won't satisfy the specialty occupation standard CBP officers apply at entry.
Target firms with active federal contracts
General contractors and construction managers working on federal, state, or municipal projects have compliance teams accustomed to TN documentation. These employers process cross-border hires more routinely than purely residential builders and are less likely to treat your status as an obstacle.
Request a TN support letter before signing
Before you accept an offer, ask the employer to draft a TN support letter specifying your job title, duties, required degree, and that the role is temporary in nature. Without this letter, Canadian professionals cannot obtain TN status at a port of entry.
Use Migrate Mate to filter sponsorship-ready employers
Searching broadly wastes time on employers unfamiliar with TN requirements. Migrate Mate lets you filter Construction Project Manager openings by sponsors who have filed TN or similar work visa petitions, so you start with employers already prepared to support your application.
Prepare a credential equivalency document for Mexican applicants
Mexican professionals applying at a U.S. consulate should obtain a credential evaluation from a NACES-approved evaluator confirming their degree is equivalent to a U.S. bachelor's in engineering or a related field. Consular officers review this alongside the support letter and offer documentation.
Align your job description to engineering duties, not management labels
CBP and consular officers scrutinize whether the role requires theoretical and practical application of engineering principles. Frame your duties around technical oversight, structural or project design review, and engineering compliance rather than general team or budget management language.
Construction Project Manager TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Construction Project Manager role qualify for TN visa status?
Yes, but qualification depends on your specific duties and degree. CBP and consular officers look for roles requiring a bachelor's degree or higher in engineering, architecture, or a closely related field. If your position centers on technical engineering oversight rather than general business management, it fits the TN engineer category. A vague job title alone does not guarantee approval.
How does TN compare to H-1B for Construction Project Manager positions?
TN has no annual lottery and no numerical cap for Canadian citizens, meaning you can obtain status the same day at a port of entry. H-1B visa requires employer sponsorship months in advance and selection in a randomized lottery with roughly a 25% chance annually. For Mexican citizens, TN involves a consular appointment but still avoids the lottery entirely, making it a faster and more predictable path for qualifying construction management professionals.
Where can I find Construction Project Manager jobs that offer TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for this search. It surfaces Construction Project Manager openings from employers with a demonstrated history of sponsoring TN and other work visas, so you're not cold-applying to companies that don't understand the process. Filtering by TN-ready sponsors cuts through the noise and connects you with employers prepared to issue the required support letter.
Can I switch Construction Project Manager employers while on TN status?
Yes, but you must obtain new TN status before starting with the new employer. TN authorization is tied to a specific employer and position. Canadian citizens can present new documentation at a port of entry to change employers. Mexican citizens must return to a U.S. consulate for a new TN visa stamp. You cannot simply transfer TN status between employers the way some other visa categories allow.
What documentation does a construction employer need to provide for my TN petition?
Your employer must provide a signed support letter on company letterhead that describes your job title, a summary of duties confirming the role requires engineering or architectural knowledge, your start date, the temporary nature of the position, and your anticipated compensation. For Mexican applicants, the consulate will also review your degree credentials and the DS-160 application. Canadian applicants present the same support letter directly to CBP at the border.
