Verify your licensure transfers across states
TN visa approval requires a license recognized in the state where you'll practice. Confirm your provincial or national credential meets that state's reciprocity rules before accepting an offer, since licensing gaps can stall your CBP entry.
Target healthcare systems with existing TN pipelines
Hospital networks, university counseling centers, and community mental health agencies hire internationally trained psychologists regularly. These employers already understand TN documentation requirements and are far less likely to withdraw offers over visa concerns.
Prepare a specialty occupation support letter early
CBP officers evaluate whether your Counseling Psychologist role requires a doctoral degree. Ask your employer to draft a support letter citing the position's clinical complexity and state licensure requirement before your border crossing or consular appointment.
Clarify supervision scope in your job offer letter
Roles that include administrative or managerial duties can complicate TN classification if psychology isn't the primary function. Make sure your offer letter describes clinical counseling duties as the core of the position, not a secondary responsibility.
Search TN-specific listings through Migrate Mate
Most job boards don't filter by visa type, so you waste time on roles where sponsorship isn't available. Migrate Mate surfaces Counseling Psychologist positions where employers are already open to TN sponsorship, cutting out the guesswork.
File TN documentation at a land port for Canadians
Canadian citizens can request TN status directly at a CBP port of entry without a prior consular appointment. Bring your offer letter, doctoral degree, and state license. Processing typically takes under two hours and avoids weeks of consular scheduling delays.
Counseling Psychologist TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Counseling Psychologist role qualify for TN visa status?
Yes. Counseling Psychologist is an explicitly listed occupation under the USMCA TN category for Psychologist. To qualify, you need a doctoral degree in psychology and a state license where required for independent practice. CBP will verify that your job duties align with licensed psychological services, not general counseling or social work functions.
How does TN visa sponsorship compare to H-1B for Counseling Psychologists?
TN has no annual lottery, no cap for Canadians, and no USCIS petition filing required for Canadian applicants crossing by land. H-1B visa selection is random and limited to 85,000 slots per fiscal year. For Counseling Psychologists who qualify under USMCA, TN sponsorship is significantly faster to obtain and can be arranged directly at the border or consulate without waiting for an annual registration window.
Where can I find Counseling Psychologist jobs that offer TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for this search. It filters Counseling Psychologist listings by TN visa eligibility so you're only looking at employers who are already open to sponsoring USMCA professionals. This saves time you'd otherwise spend screening roles that don't support TN status or require citizenship.
Can Mexican citizens get TN sponsorship for Counseling Psychologist roles?
Yes, but the process differs from the Canadian pathway. Mexican TN applicants must apply at a U.S. consulate in Mexico rather than at a port of entry, and they're subject to a separate annual allocation. Appointment wait times at consulates vary by location and season, so factoring in scheduling lead time when planning your start date is important.
What documents does my employer need to provide for TN sponsorship?
Your employer must provide a support letter confirming your job title, a description of your clinical duties, the requirement for a doctoral degree in psychology, your expected start date, and your compensation terms. The letter should make clear that the role meets the USMCA Psychologist classification. You bring this letter along with your degree credentials and state license to the CBP inspection or consular interview.
