Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as an Executive Chef
Match your credentials to the role
TN visa classification requires your degree to align with the specific Executive Chef position. A culinary arts or hospitality management degree supports the application; a general business degree alone won't. Gather your transcripts and any professional certifications before outreach.
Target hospitality groups with multi-property operations
Hotel groups, resort chains, and restaurant groups with multiple U.S. locations are more likely to have HR teams experienced in TN sponsorship. A single-location independent restaurant may offer the role but lack the process knowledge to execute the paperwork.
Clarify sponsorship capability before accepting offers
Ask hiring managers directly whether they've sponsored TN visas before and who internally owns the filing. Many employers will agree to sponsor but haven't done it, which delays your start date and can jeopardize your status timeline.
Use Migrate Mate to find TN-eligible chef roles
Searching broadly for Executive Chef roles wastes time on employers unfamiliar with visa sponsorship. Migrate Mate filters for Executive Chef positions at employers with recent visa filings, so you can focus outreach on companies experienced with supporting international workers.
Prepare a TN support letter that addresses specialty occupation
Your employer's support letter must explain why the Executive Chef role requires a specialized degree, not just culinary experience. USCIS scrutinizes roles where experiential qualifications are common. The letter should connect your specific credentials to the duties of the position.
Understand the Mexican TN annual cap before you commit
Mexican citizens are subject to an annual TN allocation under USMCA, unlike Canadians who face no cap. If you're a Mexican national applying late in the fiscal year, confirm your employer is prepared to file promptly to avoid delays from cap exhaustion.
Executive Chef TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an Executive Chef role actually qualify for a TN visa?
It can, but it depends on how the role is structured. The TN visa covers professionals in occupations requiring a bachelor's degree or higher in a specific field. An Executive Chef position tied to a degree in culinary arts or hospitality management qualifies. Roles where the employer focuses primarily on years of kitchen experience, without a degree requirement, are harder to support and may face additional scrutiny.
How does the TN visa compare to H-1B for Executive Chef positions?
The TN visa has no annual lottery and no cap for Canadian citizens, which makes it significantly more predictable than H-1B visa. H-1B requires a petition filed months in advance, a lottery selection, and a fixed start date. TN allows Canadians to apply at the border on the day they start, with a support letter and credentials in hand. Mexican citizens use the consular process, which adds time but still avoids the lottery.
What documents does my employer need to provide for my TN sponsorship?
Your employer needs to provide a support letter on company letterhead that describes your specific duties, confirms the degree requirement for the position, states your offered compensation, and declares the temporary nature of the engagement. USCIS does not adjudicate TN petitions for Canadians, so the letter is reviewed at the port of entry or consulate directly. The letter must be detailed enough to satisfy a CBP officer or consular officer on the spot.
Where can I find Executive Chef jobs that offer TN visa sponsorship?
Most general job boards don't filter by visa sponsorship type, which means you spend significant time contacting employers who aren't set up to sponsor work visas. Migrate Mate is built specifically for TN-eligible professionals and surfaces Executive Chef roles at employers with recent visa filings, so you can target your search more efficiently.
Can I switch Executive Chef employers after my TN is approved?
Yes, but your TN status is tied to the specific employer listed in your application. Changing employers requires your new employer to issue a fresh support letter and, for Canadians, a new TN entry at the border or port of entry. Mexican nationals would need a new consular appointment. There is no grace period for employer changes, so time the transition carefully to avoid a gap in work authorization.
