TN Visa Restaurant Jobs
Restaurant jobs in the U.S. rarely come with built-in TN visa sponsorship, but management, dietary consulting, and nutrition-adjacent roles in food service can qualify under USMCA professional categories. Canadian citizens can apply at the border or a U.S. consulate without a cap; Mexican citizens go through a consulate with a limited annual allocation.

Match your credentials to qualifying TN categories
Restaurant roles qualify for TN visa status through categories like Dietitian, Nutritionist, or Management Consultant. Gather your degree certificates and verify the field of study aligns with the specific USMCA professional category your offer letter will cite.
Target chains with dedicated immigration HR teams
Hospitality groups operating across the U.S. and Canada are far more likely to have processed TN documentation before. Focus your search on multi-unit operators where HR already understands USMCA professional sponsorship requirements and won't treat your request as a first.
Get your job offer letter TN-ready before applying
The offer letter must state your professional category, duties, and that the role requires your specific degree. A vague letter citing general kitchen management duties can trigger a CBP denial at the border. Ask HR to use the exact USMCA category language.
Use Migrate Mate to filter roles at visa-sponsoring employers
Most restaurant job listings don't flag visa sponsorship. Search on Migrate Mate to surface employers with recent visa filings in food service and hospitality, so you're not guessing which employers have experience sponsoring work visas at the offer stage.
Prepare for CBP questions on specialty occupation status
Canadian applicants processed at the border face officer scrutiny on whether a restaurant role genuinely requires a bachelor's degree. Bring your diploma, transcripts, and a concise written summary of how your duties require specialized professional knowledge, not just supervisory experience.
Confirm Mexican TN allocation timing with your employer early
Mexican citizens have a 5,500-per-year TN cap managed through consular processing. Ask your prospective employer to confirm the timeline for consulate scheduling before you resign from a current position, since peak periods can add weeks to appointment availability.
Restaurant TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Which restaurant roles actually qualify for TN visa sponsorship?
TN status covers specific USMCA professional categories, not job titles. Restaurant roles that can qualify include Dietitian or Nutritionist, Management Consultant engaged in food service operations, and Hotel Manager if the establishment qualifies. General chef, line cook, and front-of-house positions do not meet the professional degree requirement and are not eligible.
How does TN compare to H-1B for restaurant and hospitality professionals?
TN has no annual lottery and no cap for Canadian citizens, making it far more predictable than H-1B visa for qualifying roles. H-1B requires employer sponsorship months in advance and a lottery selection. TN can be obtained at a port of entry for Canadians the same day. Mexican nationals face a 5,500-per-year TN cap, but the process still avoids the H-1B lottery entirely.
How do I find restaurant employers who will sponsor a TN visa?
Most hospitality job listings don't disclose sponsorship willingness upfront. Migrate Mate filters employers by recent visa filings, so you can focus on operations that have already sponsored work visas rather than discovering a hard no after multiple interview rounds.
Can I switch restaurant employers while on TN status?
Yes, but TN status is employer-specific. You cannot start working for a new employer until your new TN documentation is in place. Canadian citizens can obtain new TN status at the border with a fresh offer letter from the new employer. Mexican citizens need to return to a U.S. consulate. Confirm the new role still meets the professional category requirements before making the move.
What happens if CBP denies my TN application at the border for a restaurant role?
A denial at the port of entry typically means the officer found the role doesn't require a bachelor's degree in a professional specialty or that your credentials don't support the cited category. You can reapply with stronger documentation, including a more detailed duty description and supporting degree transcripts, but there is no formal appeal process from a CBP border denial.
