TN Visa Line Cook Jobs
Line Cook roles don't appear on the official USMCA TN visa occupation list, which means Canadian and Mexican culinary professionals can't use TN sponsorship for this position. A qualifying specialty occupation degree and a matching job offer are both required, and Line Cook doesn't meet that threshold under current treaty terms.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as a Line Cook
Document your culinary credentials precisely
If your role overlaps with a qualifying category, gather your formal culinary certificates, diplomas, and any provincial or national licensing records. Vague credentials are a common reason TN petitions get questioned at the border.
Target employers with immigration filing history
Hospitality groups and hotel chains that have sponsored work visas before are more familiar with the TN process. Prioritize employers who already work with immigration counsel rather than those encountering sponsorship for the first time.
Ask employers about job title classification early
Some culinary positions can be reclassified under qualifying TN categories depending on actual duties. Raise the question of job title and duties with your prospective employer before any formal offer is extended.
Use Migrate Mate to find sponsoring employers
Searching for employers open to TN sponsorship in food service is time-consuming. Migrate Mate filters job listings by visa sponsorship type so you can focus on employers already set up to support your application.
Understand the Mexican TN cap implications
Mexican nationals face a 5,500 annual TN allocation, unlike Canadians who have no cap. If you're Mexican and your role qualifies under a TN category, timing your application before fiscal year limits are reached matters.

Find Line Cook JobsLine Cook TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Line Cook role qualify for a TN visa?
Line Cook is not listed as a qualifying occupation under the USMCA TN visa framework. TN status requires the role to match one of the specific professional categories defined in the treaty, and culinary trade positions like Line Cook do not meet that standard. If your duties significantly overlap with a listed profession, a reclassification discussion with an immigration professional is the appropriate next step.
How does the TN visa compare to the H-1B for culinary roles?
Neither the TN visa nor the H-1B is designed for trade-level culinary positions like Line Cook. The H-1B requires a specialty occupation with a bachelor's degree equivalent, and Line Cook typically doesn't qualify there either. The TN is faster and has no lottery for Canadians, but both visas share the same fundamental barrier: the role must meet a professional or specialty occupation standard that Line Cook generally doesn't reach.
Can a Mexican Line Cook apply for TN status?
Mexican nationals face the same occupation eligibility requirements as Canadians under the USMCA TN framework. Since Line Cook isn't a listed TN occupation, Mexican professionals in this role can't obtain TN status on that basis. Mexican applicants also face a 5,500 annual cap, which adds urgency to pursuing only roles that genuinely qualify.
What should I do if my Line Cook duties include supervisory or management functions?
If your role involves significant management responsibilities, your employer may be able to reclassify the position under a qualifying TN category. The actual duties performed, not just the job title, determine TN eligibility. You'd need a formal job offer letter describing those duties in detail and an immigration professional to assess whether the reclassified role holds up at the border or during USCIS review.
How do I find employers who sponsor TN visas for food service roles?
Migrate Mate is built specifically to surface employers with active visa sponsorship history in the U.S., including food service and hospitality. Searching there lets you skip employers unfamiliar with the TN process and focus on those already set up to support a sponsorship filing, which is especially valuable if your role can be legitimately reclassified under a qualifying TN occupation.
