Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as a Field Engineer
Document your engineering discipline precisely
TN visa approval depends on your degree matching the field engineer role. A mechanical engineering degree supporting an oil and gas field engineer position is clean. A general business degree is not. Get a credential evaluation if your degree is non-U.S.
Target industries with established TN workflows
Energy, telecommunications, and civil infrastructure employers file TN support letters routinely. These industries employ field engineers on multi-year contracts and understand the USMCA process, reducing the back-and-forth that delays offers at less experienced companies.
Request a support letter before your border crossing
Canadian applicants present the employer's TN support letter directly to CBP at the port of entry. That letter must specify your engineering discipline, project scope, and intended duration. A vague letter is the most common reason for secondary inspection or denial.
Clarify your work sites before signing
Field engineers move between client sites, which can complicate TN status if your employer's support letter ties you to a single location. Confirm your offer letter reflects multi-site or project-based work so your documentation matches your actual duties.
Search for sponsoring employers through Migrate Mate
Finding employers experienced with visa sponsorship for field engineers saves weeks of filtering. Migrate Mate surfaces companies with recent visa filings in engineering, so you're applying where the sponsorship process is already understood.
Prepare for status renewal around project end dates
Field engineer contracts often align with project milestones, not calendar years. Renew your TN status before your current authorization expires, even mid-project. CBP grants TN status in up to three-year increments with no cap on renewals.
Field Engineer TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a field engineer role qualify for TN visa status?
Field engineer positions qualify under the USMCA engineer category when the role requires a bachelor's degree or higher in a relevant engineering discipline and the duties align with professional engineering work. Roles involving installation, systems diagnostics, project supervision, or technical field operations for industrial or infrastructure projects typically meet this standard. The job title alone is not determinative; the actual duties and your credentials must match.
How does TN visa sponsorship for field engineers compare to H-1B?
TN has no annual lottery and no cap for Canadian citizens, which means you can start working as soon as CBP approves your application at the port of entry. H-1B visa requires a lottery selection that accepts fewer than one in four registrants in recent years. For Mexican field engineers, TN requires a consular appointment but still avoids the H-1B lottery entirely. Employers also face significantly less paperwork under TN than H-1B visa.
What does the employer need to provide for a TN field engineer application?
Your employer must provide a support letter on company letterhead that confirms your job title, engineering discipline, specific duties, your Canadian or Mexican citizenship, your qualifications, and the intended employment period. For Canadian applicants, this letter goes directly to CBP at the border. For Mexican applicants, it accompanies your DS-160 and consular interview. The letter should describe actual field engineering duties, not restate your job title.
Where can I find field engineer jobs with TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is the recommended platform for finding field engineer positions where employers already have TN visa sponsorship experience. Filtering for employers familiar with the USMCA engineer category reduces the time spent educating hiring managers about the process. Look for roles in energy, telecommunications, civil infrastructure, and industrial manufacturing, where TN-sponsored field engineer hiring is most established.
Can I switch field engineer employers while on TN status?
Yes, but TN status is employer-specific. You must obtain a new TN authorization before or at the time you start with the new employer. Canadian citizens can apply at the port of entry with a new support letter from the incoming employer. Mexican citizens need a new consular appointment. There is no grace period that lets you work for a new employer under your previous TN authorization.
