Align your credentials to U.S. licensure expectations
TN doesn't require a P.E. license, but many U.S. fire protection employers expect candidates working on life-safety systems to hold or be pursuing NICET certification. Highlight any NFPA code experience on your resume before applying.
Target employers with active AHJ relationships
Firms that regularly coordinate with Authorities Having Jurisdiction are accustomed to sponsoring international engineers. Engineering consultancies, sprinkler design firms, and large general contractors are your strongest starting point for TN-friendly openings.
Confirm your degree field maps to the TN engineering category
CBP officers assess whether your degree qualifies under the Engineering category. A degree in fire protection engineering maps cleanly. Mechanical or civil engineering degrees with relevant coursework also qualify, but bring transcripts to your port-of-entry inspection.
Use Migrate Mate to find roles at sponsorship-experienced employers
Search Migrate Mate to find Fire Protection Engineer positions at employers with recent visa filings. This cuts out the guesswork of cold-applying to companies without sponsorship experience.
Get the support letter before any border crossing
Your employer must provide a support letter describing your role, salary, and TN classification before you appear at a port of entry or U.S. consulate. Canadian citizens can be admitted same-day at the border; Mexican citizens must schedule a consular appointment first.
Prepare for technical questions during CBP review
CBP officers occasionally ask how your role involves fire protection engineering specifically. Have a plain-language explanation ready that connects your job duties to code compliance, suppression system design, or hazard analysis, not just project management.

Find Fire Protection Engineer JobsFire Protection Engineer TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Fire Protection Engineer qualify for TN visa status?
Yes. Fire Protection Engineer falls under the Engineering professional category in the USMCA TN visa list. Your degree must be in an engineering field, and your job duties must involve professional engineering work such as fire suppression system design, code analysis, or life-safety consulting. A general project coordinator role using the same title would not qualify.
How does TN compare to H-1B for Fire Protection Engineers?
TN has no annual lottery and no cap for Canadian citizens, so you don't risk going unselected the way H-1B applicants do. Canadians can apply at the border and receive same-day admission. The trade-off is that TN is employer-tied and doesn't lead directly to a green card, while H-1B holders can pursue permanent residence through EB-2 or EB-3 sponsorship.
What documents do I need to cross the border as a Canadian Fire Protection Engineer?
Bring your valid Canadian passport, a signed employer support letter specifying your TN classification and role, proof of your engineering degree, and any professional credentials such as NICET certifications or a P.E. license. CBP may ask for a copy of your offer letter as well. Transcripts are not required but are worth carrying if your degree title is not explicitly in engineering.
How do I find Fire Protection Engineer jobs that offer TN visa sponsorship?
Most standard job postings don't specify TN sponsorship, which makes filtering difficult. Migrate Mate lists Fire Protection Engineer roles from employers who have confirmed they sponsor TN visas, so you're applying to openings where sponsorship is already on the table rather than negotiating it after an offer.
Can a Mexican Fire Protection Engineer apply at the border like a Canadian?
No. Mexican TN applicants must apply at a U.S. consulate and receive a TN visa stamp before traveling to the United States. The process requires scheduling a consular interview and providing the same supporting documents as a Canadian applicant. Processing times vary by consulate, so factor in several weeks between receiving your job offer and your start date.
