Frame your credentials around specialty occupation
TN visa approval for General Manager roles hinges on demonstrating that the position requires a specific bachelor's degree, not just managerial experience. Prepare a credential evaluation and a detailed employer support letter mapping your degree directly to the listed job duties.
Target employers with cross-border operations
Companies with Canadian or Mexican parent entities already understand USMCA sponsorship and face fewer internal legal hurdles approving a TN petition. Prioritize multinationals and U.S. subsidiaries of Canadian or Mexican firms when filtering your job search.
Get the offer letter framing right
Your employer's offer letter must specify the professional category, the degree required, and a defined end date for the TN period. A letter that describes vague executive responsibilities without tying them to a specialty occupation field is one of the most common reasons CBP denies entry.
Use Migrate Mate to surface TN-ready General Manager roles
Search Migrate Mate to find General Manager positions at employers who already sponsor TN visas. Filtering by sponsorship history saves you from pitching the visa concept to HR teams encountering it for the first time.
Clarify your path before negotiating the offer
Mexican citizens require consular appointment processing, which adds weeks to the timeline. Disclose your citizenship and visa status early in negotiations so the employer's legal team can build realistic start-date expectations into the offer before you sign.
Prepare for CBP scrutiny on broad job titles
General Manager is a title CBP officers flag when duties appear operational rather than professional. Bring your degree transcripts, a detailed duties description showing management of specialized professional staff, and the employer letter to your port of entry or consular appointment.
General Manager TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a General Manager role qualify for TN visa status?
It depends on how the role is defined. TN visa status requires the position to be a specialty occupation tied to a specific bachelor's degree field. A General Manager overseeing professional staff in business administration, finance, or operations can qualify, but a role focused primarily on logistics or hourly workforce supervision typically does not meet the threshold CBP applies.
How does TN visa sponsorship compare to H-1B for General Manager positions?
TN has no annual lottery and no cap for Canadian citizens, so your employer can file and you can start work without waiting for a fiscal year slot. H-1B visa requires entering the lottery, and selection is not guaranteed. For General Manager roles where both visas apply, TN is faster and more predictable, though it does not allow dual intent toward a green card the way H-1B does.
What documents does a Canadian General Manager need at the border?
Canadian citizens can apply for TN status directly at a U.S. port of entry. You'll need a valid Canadian passport, the employer's detailed support letter confirming the specialty occupation and degree requirement, your academic credentials or transcripts, and the job offer. CBP officers adjudicate TN applications on the spot, so having a thorough employer letter reduces the risk of a secondary review or denial.
Where can I find General Manager jobs that already offer TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for Canadian and Mexican professionals searching for U.S. roles with TN visa sponsorship. You can filter by job title and see which employers have an established sponsorship track record, which avoids spending weeks on applications with companies unfamiliar with the USMCA professional category requirements.
Can a Mexican citizen get TN status for a General Manager role, and how is the process different?
Yes, Mexican citizens qualify for TN status in the same professional categories as Canadians, but must apply through a U.S. consulate rather than at a port of entry. The consular appointment and visa stamp process adds several weeks to the timeline. Mexican nationals are also subject to a separate annual TN allocation, so employers and candidates should confirm current availability with a qualified immigration professional before the offer stage.
