Frame your role as management consulting
National Account Director positions qualify under TN visa's Management Consultant category only when the role involves advising clients on business strategy, not purely sales execution. Document your consulting functions clearly in your offer letter before any employer files.
Request a detailed support letter early
Your employer's support letter must describe your specific advisory duties, your bachelor's degree field, and why the role qualifies as specialty consulting. A vague letter citing only your title is the most common reason CBP officers ask additional questions at the border.
Search for employers with recent visa filings
Use Migrate Mate to identify companies with recent visa filings that match senior account and consulting roles. Targeting employers already experienced with work visa sponsorship streamlines the process, since they understand the documentation requirements and can move more quickly from offer to start date.
Target enterprise-focused companies over pure sales orgs
Enterprise technology, professional services, and B2B SaaS firms are more likely to structure National Account Director roles around strategic consulting deliverables, which strengthens your TN eligibility argument compared to roles framed around revenue quotas.
Understand the Mexican consular appointment timeline
Mexican citizens must attend a U.S. consular interview before beginning work, unlike Canadians who can seek TN admission directly at a port of entry. Factor in consulate wait times when negotiating your start date with a prospective employer.
Align your degree field with the advisory scope
CBP officers assess whether your academic background supports a consulting function in your industry. A business administration or marketing degree paired with a role description emphasizing strategic account planning is a stronger TN package than a mismatched credential.
National Account Director TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a National Account Director role qualify for a TN visa?
It can qualify under the TN Management Consultant category, but only when the role is structured around strategic advisory functions rather than direct sales. Your offer letter and employer support letter must specifically describe consulting duties such as developing client business strategies, assessing organizational needs, or advising on account growth plans. A title alone is not enough for CBP to approve TN status.
How does TN visa sponsorship compare to H-1B for National Account Director roles?
TN has no annual lottery and no cap for Canadian citizens, so you can start as soon as CBP approves your application at a port of entry. H-1B visa requires winning a randomized lottery and waiting up to a year before employment begins. For Mexican nationals, the TN consular process is still faster and more predictable than the H-1B lottery cycle, making TN the practical first choice when the role qualifies.
What documents does my employer need to provide for TN sponsorship?
Your employer must produce a support letter on company letterhead that describes the specific consulting nature of your National Account Director role, confirms your degree qualifications, states the duration of employment, and certifies your compensation terms. CBP reviews this letter alongside your academic credentials at the port of entry. The letter carries more weight than your job title, so vague language about sales responsibilities can create problems.
How can I find National Account Director jobs that offer TN visa sponsorship?
Use Migrate Mate to search specifically for National Account Director openings at employers with demonstrated TN sponsorship activity. Most general job boards don't filter by visa sponsorship type, so you end up spending time on applications that lead to rejections once the employer learns you need TN support. Migrate Mate surfaces roles where sponsorship is already part of the employer's hiring posture.
Can I change employers after receiving TN status in a National Account Director role?
Yes, but your TN status is tied to your specific employer and role. Changing jobs requires a new TN approval before you begin work with the new company. Canadian citizens can seek a new TN at a port of entry with the new employer's documentation, while Mexican citizens must return to a U.S. consulate. Plan your transition timeline carefully so there's no gap between your last day and your new TN start date.
