Audit your degree against TN engineering criteria
TN visa classification for Solutions Engineers hinges on your degree being in engineering or a closely related field. A computer science or electrical engineering degree typically qualifies, but an MBA or business degree alone won't satisfy CBP's specialty requirement for this role.
Target employers with cross-border hiring infrastructure
Focus on companies that already employ Canadian or Mexican professionals in technical roles. These employers have HR teams familiar with TN documentation and won't stall your start date trying to understand a visa category their legal team has never processed.
Request an offer letter that reflects engineering duties
Your offer letter is the document CBP scrutinizes at the border. Ask your employer to describe your role using engineering language, such as system design, technical architecture, or integration engineering, rather than vague terms like solutions or pre-sales support.
Prepare for CBP questions on pre-sales versus engineering work
CBP officers sometimes flag Solutions Engineer roles as sales-adjacent rather than technical. Bring documentation showing your engineering deliverables, such as architecture diagrams, technical proposals, or proof of concept outputs, to establish that your duties are engineering-led.
Use Migrate Mate to find TN-ready Principal Solutions Engineer roles
Searching general job boards surfaces roles with no TN context. Migrate Mate filters specifically for employers open to TN sponsorship, so you're applying to companies that already understand the visa category and won't withdraw offers over immigration uncertainty.
Understand the Mexican TN cap before negotiating your start date
Mexican nationals are subject to an annual TN allocation under USMCA. Consular processing adds time that Canadian candidates don't face. Build at least four to six weeks into your start date negotiation to account for appointment scheduling and document review.
Principal Solutions Engineer TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Principal Solutions Engineer role qualify for TN visa status?
It depends on how the role is defined. TN visa classification uses the Engineers category, which requires your job duties to be predominantly engineering in nature and your degree to be in an engineering field. Roles weighted toward sales, account management, or product demonstrations without a strong technical engineering component can be denied at the border, so the offer letter framing matters.
How does TN visa sponsorship compare to H-1B for Principal Solutions Engineers?
TN has no annual lottery and no cap for Canadian citizens, meaning you can begin work as soon as CBP approves your application at the port of entry. H-1B visa requires winning a random lottery held once a year and waiting until October 1 to start. For qualified Canadian professionals, TN is a significantly faster and more predictable path to U.S. employment in this role.
What documents does my employer need to provide for my TN application?
Your employer must provide a detailed support letter on company letterhead that describes your job title, engineering duties, intended start date, work location, and the fact that your position is temporary. CBP does not require a government-approved petition for TN status, but the support letter functions as the primary evidence. Some employers also include organizational charts or project descriptions to reinforce the technical nature of the role.
Where can I find Principal Solutions Engineer jobs that offer TN visa sponsorship?
Most general job boards don't filter by visa category, making it hard to identify which employers are actually open to TN candidates. Migrate Mate is built specifically for Canadian and Mexican professionals seeking U.S. roles under the TN visa, so the listings you see are already screened for sponsorship openness. That cuts out the back-and-forth with employers who've never processed a TN application.
Can I switch employers on a TN visa without losing my status?
You can change employers, but your TN status is tied to the specific employer listed in your original application. You must obtain new TN authorization before starting with the new company. For Canadian citizens, this means a new port of entry application with a fresh support letter from the incoming employer. For Mexican nationals, it requires a new consular appointment. There is no employer portability under TN the way there is under H-1B with an approved I-140.
